Aux Input and iPod Use

Sorry, but I swear I couldn't find this already, I did look even, and I have to believe its been covered, but I give up...

If I get the aux input from outmotoring or the like, will it work on my stock '05 head unit, and almost as importantly, will I still be able to use the ipod's own controls while it is attached to the system? I don't have the multi function steering wheel.

Thanks for the help.

I believe the ONLY controls you can use are the iPod's controls...not the steering wheel or the stereo. And yes, it will work with your '05.

I'm not positive about the compatability with the '05, but I think so. And yes, you'll be able to use the iPod's controls, just not the radio's (except for volume obviously) If you want the radio to be able to change tracks on the ipod, then there's the iceLink, but it's quite a bit more expensive than the Aux adapter.

I just had the Aux Input installed in my '05 on Monday. All iPod controls function normally. And, of course, the head units volume control works too. I've used it with the new iPod Shuffle and everything works as expected.

ipod adapter

I just had the dealer install the ipod adapter on my '05 Cooper and it is the best thing I've ever had in a car. You just hook up the ipod, close it in the glove box and play thru your stereo (and steering controls, if you have them) and it charges the ipod while you drive (with auto shut off when full).

It is more $$, but why would you want to have charger wires and plugs, plus auxillary cables running all over you nice interior? Only to have to change songs looking at your ipod anyway?

Recipe for disaster, IMO.

Cos I don't have an iPod. I'm going to use the Aux input to play mp3s through my mp3-compatible discman.

sandtoast500, does the adapter allow you to "browse" songs by artist, etc? Does any info show up on the stereo display?

Very interested in the adapter, but have heard conflicting stories...

ipod adapter

oops, I exited out of my original response earlier this morning...

Unfortuatly, it does not show the song titles...

You create 5 playlists, MINI1, MINI2, etc., however you want, then you can press the playlist # on the preset station button, #6 is for the whole library..., and you can skip thru the songs, which are arranged by artist, then album, then track #, same as on itunes when you sort by artist. But you can shuffle each playlist, which is the best thing about the ipod , and allow it to select tracks while keeping track of which have played already.

I believe it was about $400 installed from the dealer.

Hope this helps. Some may see value, some may not.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info! And yeah, shuffle-play is great. I'm still undecided, but it seems like the iPod adapter _is_ still worthwhile, because you can control the iPod from the Dash (or steering wheel), and you eliminate some extraneous wiring. I'm assuming the $400 dealer installation figure included the hardware?

Sandtoat500, you’re talking about the car kit, I think the thread started off with just the aux kit that is only $32.00. It’s true, the car kit only plays play list, and charges the iPod, it still needs more functions for that price. The aux kit lets you plug direct to the radio from the iPod. All iPod controls are on the iPod, but you can use vol. on the MFSW. I still think this is the best deal on the market right now till the ice-link system is debugged.

As a side note I bought a Belkin F8V7058-APLiPod Auto Kit Car Charger for $.99 and $6.75 to ship it (normally 29.99 in stores) off of ebay. I also got a Belkin Tunedok Apple iPod Car Holder Mount F8E467 for $15.00 and $6.99 shipping off ebay (normally $39.99). So for a totally cost of $61.73, I have a hook up for the iPod to the radio, a charger for long trips, and a holder to keep it from hitting me inthe corners! A 40 gig iPod that is full, Priceless.....

I got mine for $1.04 + $6.75 to ship from eBay; I'm sure from the same company. They had lots of them listed if others want to start bidding. Just look carefully because there's another company that has a lot of them listed but they want $10 to ship.

I installed my Aux adapter yesterday. Paid $32 from Desert MINI (20% discount for being a Sin City MINI Club member) and it took me about 30 mins to install. The longest part of the time was making the center hole big enough to mount the exposed end. Worked 1st go and everything!

aux input

Went to the dealer today for my first service. While I was there asked about the price of the aux in plug, they quoted me 79euros plus 170 eueos for instillation, I found this quite high and said I could order the part from the states for about $40, and I also mentioned that many people have installed it themselves.

Question:I an willing to order the part from the states, could I get someone who has a shop for car stereo instillation to install it? What would be a fair price of 'non-MINI' work?
