3D Print/Design Experts!

Not sure if this is a realistic project as I don't know much about the limitations of 3D design & printing. What I want to do is recreate the center bezel that hold my basic head unit but it would extend out a bit further to clear the ***** and have a channel on the sides and bottom to securely hold a tablet to be used in place of the h/u for music, nav, etc.

Can this be done? Anybody on here capable and willing to try this? Not a money making project as I doubt many people would be buyers of this.

TIA

PM with ?

Hmmm, interesting project. Are you trying to make something that will permanently replace your head unit or more like something you can add on when needed like at HPDE/AutoX events?

Unfortunately most of the cost of this project is going to be related to the design. Finish could also get expensive if you are looking for a factory fresh appearance when completed.

I'm not to worried about finish because I can just vinyl wrap the plastic piece or paint it. I don't use the head unit for music anymore as the sound direct to my DSP/AMP is much better through the Bluetooth connection from my phone. Problem is the phone is too tiny for my old hand eye coordination to mess with while driving. So I'd like to have a larger tablet interface to deal with. Haven't found a reliable way to replace the head unit without losing the diagnostics that are built into the factory unit. All the Chinese Android units claim everything works, but the reality is they are probably BSing me just to sell me something.

What I need to know is the cost, and how to find someone to do the design, which really isn't very complex.

Oooh. Not quite what you are looking for, but THIS was nicely done.

I would expect to pay around $100 for the design work and significantly more for the printing depending on who you find to print it. This is a bit outside of the size limitation of consumer printers, but could always be printed in multiple pieces and assembled after the fact.

Also unless you can provide detailed napkin sketches of what you want you are essentially limited to designers with access to the car to be able to measure, test, and iterate. On that note... What car is this for? If it's for the R60 I could take a crack at it just for fun. ;]

It's for the F56.

That linked idea is a bit unclear to me, is it a disk that fits over the display?

Bummer! Let me know if you still want to try having something designed. I basically only need an ID, OD, and rough sketch and scale of the bezel contour.

The linked idea was the idea of replacing the entire head unit, which you don't want to do. Still I thought their end result was pretty spiffy. The only thing they had to give up to install that permanently was the giant speedo, which would not be your case. You still need access to your settings through the OE headunit. Just thought it was cool and figured I would share.

I need to find something I can use to mock up exactly what I want before wasting your time. I did find a trim ring on Ebay with measurements, but they don't seem all that accurate so I'm not posting them up here. Maybe a trip to a craft store for some modeling clay first.

Psssh... Worried about wasting my time when I spend a good portion of my day floating around on forums. How very noble of you. =]

Let me know when you've got a concept sketched or sculpted.

I found one of these used on Amazon for $20 so going to try this out before going 3D print crazy. https://ctadigital.com/product/multi...xy-tab-s3-9-7/
