Piaa Light install assistance.

I need to know if I can link the Piaa lights I just got directly to the line that runs the high beams on the MINI.

What color is the wire?

What number is it in the lighting harness.

Will I be able to link it up with none of the other hardware or do I need to incorporate some of the odd bits I see in the harness?

I've got the same kit, so if you run into a snag, let me know. I'll be glad to help if I can.

The PIAAA kit that I got has at least two copies of the wiring diagram in it. On my wiring harness it seems pretty simple - white to positive, black to negative, and white with red dots to the relay power source. Thus, if you only want the lamps to come on when the high beams are on, you draw from that wire. There is also a nice mouse-type on-off switch with color-changing led to show if the lights are on or off.

The only problem is if you have DTRL turned on. I am told that the car controls the daytime running lights by using a transistor to power down the high beam (to avoid the Xenon low beam bulb in cars so equipped). This may not provide enough power to the relay, which, when underpowered, buzzes like an angry bee! If this is the case, you may need to draw the relay power from some other location - just choose one that is shut off when the ignition is turned off.

You're talking about the trigger wire, right? Not the main 12v power.

hope so!

Well in the interest of time I did the standard install and found that the switch is not a relay, so with it in the on position the rally lights go on every time I turn on the high beams just as I wanted.

So is your high beam harness also supplying power to your
driving lights? Is that safe? Too much current draw?

Usually for these higher current parts, I tap the main power
direct to the battery and trigger on/off with a relay.

The PIAA kit has a relay built into the wiring harness. The relay powers the lights, the wire from the high beam only serves to trigger the relay. The on/off switch allows you to keep the driving lights turned off even if the high beams are on.
