Cabin Filter, which is the "dirty" side

I'm about to do my cabin filter, and wanted to know the direction of air flow across the filter. I typically throw a dryer sheet in there with it, but it should be put on the dirty side, or "outside air" side so it gets sucked INTO the filter. Phrased differently the filter stops it from being sucked into the piping.

Attached is a cutaway of the filter in the car. The ground would be on the bottom, drivers side to the left. Would 1 or 4 be the "outside air" side?

I think air flows from 1-> 4, can someone confirm?

Air goes from 4 to 1.

There are two types of filters . One is the regular and one is the active carbon ( for reducing odor ). The carbon ones seem to be the most popular and should help with odors.

ACC Cabin Filter ( regular filter ) Part # 64311496710

Here is the diagram, make sure the side tab is on the bottom when you install the filter and its follow the track.

Thanks

Thank you for the details. I believe your right (4>1) but I think your diagram is for the RHD MIni.

You are welcome, just did mine and its was very dirty on top.

You might be looking at it backwards , see the car direction at the bottom The diagram is correct. The round hole , of the two halves, point towards the center console.

This was the result the first time I pulled it myself after finishing pre-paid maintenance on my 02S .... when the dealer was changing it .... yea, right . . I've never had one this dirty again even after 2 years in the car . . .
