Do not follow the owner's manual for removal or installation as it is wrong.
You need to slide the housing from left to right. The metal piece is a tensioner that holds it in. When you are looking at the housing there should be two L shaped catches on the right. Insert these first in the right of the opening and then pop the housing into place.
That should do it. If you need a reference remove the other housing and look at it.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Remove the other light housing and use it as a reference to bend the tensioner back into shape. If that doesn't work then I guess you'll need a new one.
You can go on sewellparts.com and reference it in a diagram if you need a new one. Then you can cross reference it against other MINIs as I'm sure it is the same part and you might be able to find a used one on ebay.
I have not looked at the light housings under the doors if you have access lighting. If it is the same you could use one of those until you get the replacement.

The light housings under the door ("puddle lamps") are entirely different. I screwed up one of my license plate lamps and couldn't bend the copper strip back into shape accurately enough for a tight fit. Ordered a new LP lamp for less than $20, IIRC.

I also followed the manuals instructions when replacing the license plate lamps with LED's... Thankfully I was able to bend it back into shape for a tight fit.
