I started with magnetic bonnett stripes and thought they looked very good after trimming them to fit perfect. I did however have them come off twice in a very strong cross wind before I put on the vinyl. I have a friend who has had his magnetic stripes on for 2 years and never had them come off. Actually his magnetics I thought were vinyl until I looked close one day and I explained my wind removal. He said he has never had that problem. Good luck with your decision

got pictures? cuz I've never heard of this. people use heat to remove stripes but not to apply ... usually.

What's the damage?

You are not seeing paint fading are you?

not sure if it's the same for the stripes but...

i can tell you that when we make magnetic signs we recommend that the user removes and cleans both the vehicle and the back of the signs once a week.

If you don't do this, moisture can form under the sign and cause pitting in your paint.

I'd go back with the adhesive vinyl. I had a company put viper stripes on mine and they came out looking excellent. If you use the magnetics you'll have to worry about fading, cleaning, etc. Other than the spot you have at the top of the hood is there fading?

I agree with soccerbummer, it looks like adhesive, I can't imagine a heatgun causing that much damage from applying vinyls. With the amount of heat needed to damage the paint, it would melt and ruin the vinyl as well.

That is bizarre, but it is not from using a heat gun. You would have to keep the gun on one area and basically burn the paint to get even close to that, but it would look totally different. That and you would destroy the vinyl in the process.
I would suggest that the hood has been resprayed at some point and has reacted to the vinyl.
I had a red car once that had a white decal "tattoo" the paint with a slight blue tinge. If the stripes were on for a long time, it may be a reaction from that.

Come to think of it, I remember removing a wrap on an R53 that left a stain in the same position on the hood. What is under there? It may have had something to do with the ink though.

On another note, I had some magnets on the side of my car (Astro black) for about 3 weeks. One came off at some point on the 405, and it had left a "stain", which kinda looked like the magnet had drawn the metallic flake closer to the surface (under the clearcoat) and was lighter in appearance.
It did end up going away after a few weeks though (phew).

Good luck on that.

The magnetic stripes are kinda weird...it's hard to recommend them because it depends on your wants. It rains a lot where I live and it was annoying taking the stripes off after every day it rained. If you don't take them off often then moisture gets underneath the stripes and causes...a "fog" stain for a few days. For me I just didn't want to mess with them however they are cool because you can choose when to have stripes and when not to.

The key point with the magnetic stripes is that you need to clean underneath them often (especially after raining).
