Joey Mod- Should I Do It??

I did the joey mod on my Cooper, but now I can't decide what "look" I want to go for on my JCW. I made these photos, and I need opinions! Tell me what you think I should do!

What the car looks like now:

..the joey mod version looks pretty sweet to me! ..I vote yes

..does it have any effect on the brightness?

I'm debating to do that too, ..with all the chrome blacked out now..the stuff in the headlights really stands out. (much more than I thought it would)

..its a lot of labor/time to do..yes? ...and not easily reversible later on..?
I think my wife would really freak out if she saw me taking apart the headlights.
..I've wondered if it would be possible to make/have made some tinted molded thin plastic covers that could be fitted/snapped over the lens covers when wanted/(day driving), then easily popped off if needed.

..ever hear of anything such?

I don't have much chrome left. The beltline is getting done next, but I'm not sure what to do with the door handles and side scuttles.

You should definitely take your time doing it, but it's not hard. It's pretty much irreversible unless you use plasti-dip or vinyl, which sounds like a bad idea inside a hot light.

The covers would be really cool, but the joey mod gives you a totally different look than the average tinted headlight.

..yes, I saw a post on here showing someone had used plasti-dip in there, but it was debated on how it would hold up..and I haven't seen anything about it since.

..for now, I'm gonna just enjoy seeing you guy's work and pics, & maybe keep looking into what it would take to get the "covers" i'm thinking of done.

..if you decide to go on ahead with it, it would be great if you could snap some pics during the process.
thnx
Jason

If that paints the reflector area, then you should be fine and I say go for it. With projectors, the reflectors are useless. Now if you're thinking of coating the headlight cover (the big part) then no - you're cutting light output, as the finish wears/scratches/ages, it'll look like hell.

Bringing up an old thread here... but can anybody else give their opinion on this? I'm SO close to doing this (next weekend, probably), but I can't decide if I really want to or not. The car looks so clean right now, and I don't want the irreversible part of the joey mod to haunt me.

The other question is, should I paint the inner ring black, red, white orange, or leave it chrome? I also ordered clear turn signal bulbs so I won't have that orange haze anymore. Painting the housings gloss black will go really well with my gloss black arches/trim and gloss black wheels.

I just found this pic and I think it looks sweet with the two colors behind the lens, plus red would match my brakes... BIG DECISION!! What do you all think!?!?

Given your mods to date, I vote for the current look. If you're itching for a change, I'd recommend losing the amber lenses.

I have the clear lenses, just the amber bulbs, which are soon to be gone.

I think it would look sweet with the joey mod... I think the inner light ring painted red to match the brakes would look killer. One of these days I'll do the joey mod... once I'm out of other things to do...

Haha it's a huge decision and I'm the most indecisive person ever. What about the colors? All black or black/red?

To my eye the blacked out headlamps draw me to the windscreen stickers and make them look more obtrusive. They may be a requirement in your area, if not need to get rid of those.

Just another thought How about Body Color. You already have the trim rings and washers done.

I saw a marroon VW done that way and it really looked good. Maybe do picture of what it would look like.

It reminds me of Corvette headlights, which I'm personally not a fan of (body color housings). I think it would look good on a darker car but I think some contrast would look better.

Not to buck the concensus, but I'm not a particular fan of the painted housing either. I think your car looks "right" as is.

Ohhh I've done it several times haha. In my Cooper I tried different colors a few times and always resorted back to black. And I would NEVER!!! use plastidip somewhere that got hot!

At this point I'm pretty positive I'm going to do it, I just can't decide whether to paint the inner ring red, white, black, or leave it chrome. I guess I could always just change the color if I don't like it.

I think I'm just going to stick with all black. White would be the best choice IMO but too hard to deal with the factory paint.

The 2011 lights look to have a lot more necessary reflective surface in them. Is the Joey-mod practicable on the latest MINIs?

It depends whether you have the xenons or halogens. The halogens need the reflective surface, the xenons don't.

I decided what I'm going to do. I'm going to paint the housing black and leave the shroud chrome. If I don't like that I'm going to take them apart again and have the shroud painted pepper white at my body shop.

I'm a little late, but good choice.
