Digital Shift ****???

I was looking online at random parts and came across this in an article:

"AC Schnitzer Brings Transparency to Transmissions

High performance drivers usually play the transmission like a virtuoso: clutch, shift, gas. Depending on the number of gears, the stick passes through the gate up to six times in each direction - up and down again.

Which gear are we in now? It's purely a matter of feel, even on modern "manuals". The new sports gear **** from AC Schnitzer, with its digital display, now not only offers visual feedback as in a sequential box, but enhances the interior as a particularly cool accessory.

Best of all: it will fit almost all BMW and MINI models with manual transmission, whether brand new or somewhat older. With its bright red digits, with adjustable brightness, the digital display is perfectly visible under all lighting angles and fits perfectly into the typical interior illumination of the vehicles from Munich or Oxford.

Nor do you have to worry about complex installation: the new gear **** can be installed by technically competent owners, or by any workshop, in just a few minutes. As the display changes are triggered by position sensors, apart from a power supply no further wiring is required. And thanks to AC Schnitzer, you can move up a gear in terms of style!"

But I can not find ANYWHERE that sells this. I also found a company called INDY-CATOR (Gaslock) that sells a similar shift **** but it is a universal fit which I'm not a big fan of (they NEVER fit right). Does anyone out there know where to buy one of these from AC Schnitzer???

I searched EVERYWHERE for this and I can't find it ANYWHERE. I even checked the company's website (which is german) and I found the only dealer in the US. And they don't even have any prices!!! So I shot them an email and hopefully I can get a price. I don't suspect it being cheap whatsoever though! Probably $100+ seeing as how the other "universal" one is about $150. I'll post up any info I get on the matter either way.

From AC Schnitzer, $100 might get you one of their replacement hubcaps . Even a plain regular AC Schnitzer shift **** is $400: http://www.bavauto.com/se1.asp?dept_id=86

My friend has one in his MCSc and told me that he was having trouble programing it to the shift pattern. I don't if he got it working yet though.

But it does look sweet in there.

CECwheels.com is the north american distributor for AC Schnitzer parts and accessories. Not to say they will give you a deal but RKW is right, I would imagine that you are going to be looking at $3-$400 for the illuminated shift ****. I have the Hartge **** and ebrake and it was about $200 each, and it is billet aluminum. There are quite a few universal ones out there that will work with the Mini. If you are set on there being a light down there, look at OSIRusa.com. They make something sick that would fit perfectly. If you are dying to let the people in the back seat know what gear you are in... check out this one form Promini that is a fair price.

This for Alzheimer patients? I've never had to look at my shifter to tell what gear its in, and this is my first Manual car. Tach/Spedo should be enough to gauge what gear you're in even without knowing.

I don't mean to sound like a flamer, just seems like a pointless waste of time/$$.

Personally what I want is a diagram of the shift pattern on the tach, with the current position highlighted. I've been driving manual for over 20 years and thought of it many years ago and would still like to have something like this.

IMO, a display on the gear **** itself is too far for the eyes to turn and look.

We met with this company a few years ago at the SEMA show and initially thought it was interesting . However we did come up with the same thought that others have had and that it is too far out of the line of sight to really be of use. If you factor in the price it was a bit expensive for what it provides and we passed on the project . The Pro Mini one looks like a good unit if someone does want to go that route.

They are pretty close but they are certainly not the same. The finish on the Schnitzer **** is superior then the Gaslock version [also available at Bavarian Autosport]. For half the cost it is a good find but if what RKW wants is a shift **** with a shift gate pattern that illuminates what gear you are in, that doesn't exist. If you just want a shifter with an illuminated shift gate, there are a ton from BMW's OEM collection that would work and look nice.

Here an OEM one with the Martini Rossi theme in leather...

or one in billet aluminum...these are even on sale for $70....

I should be a personal shopper...

yeah i just got an email back from the dealer here in the US. it's $425 for it!

i just thought it would be a neat thing to have. just to 1-up your buddies and be like "my car shows me what gear i'm in!" i'm not going for it's usefulness, but more or less for the aesthetics of it. but with a price tag that high, i'm saying "screw aesthetics!" lol

.
Now that is a coooollll idea. The digital shift **** looks good, but I can come up with better things to spend that kind of money on. I like the indicator idea though, I'm so used to a 5-speed, I will quite often forget about 6th gear until it dawns on me the RPM's a a little high or I look down to find the volume ****.

Keep in mind in some states, this **** will cause you to fail Inspection, Some States require the Shift pattern to be on the **** or you will fail for a safety reason.
I know this cause it happen to me, it was no big deal to switch out the ****, but i could see with this digital thing it could be a PITA

Yeah see I just really more or less just wanted it for show, not for it's actual usefulness. Like when people buy rims for their cars and they're bigger and heavier than the stock ones. It's kinda like that. And you spend a sh*t-ton of money on rims and tires that'll make your car go slower, why not something else to spice up the interior a lil bit? I had been looking at the ProMINI one before too, but it's a universal fit which I'm not a big fan of. I've seen them for as low as $150 on some websites. It's made by Gaslock in Germany. It's called the "Indy-Cator" shift ****. Basically, I'll probably end up going down this route instead. I can find a better use for $425 than a shift ****, lol.

I am that friend, and I did not like it and took it out. It was difficult to program, and then easy to get unprogrammed. It was kind of light, and taller than the stock ****. I did not like the shift as much when I had it installed. But, I agree, it did look cool.

You sure about that? Other than the gaslock one having the universal mount on the bottom they literally look the exact same. But I guess that little AC stamp will make anything look a lot better than it really is to some.
