Interior/Exterior repainting the chrome..
repainting the chrome..
so a few months ago i painted my headlight rings, taillight rings, side scuttles, and gas cap with Krylon Fusion Gloss black spray paint. They looked great when i first put em on, but now, especially the headlight rings, are severely chipping from rocks, highway driving, etc.
I want to pull all the pieces off and repaint them. Am i better off sanding and priming the parts this time, and then hitting them with the krylon fusion paint again...OR....am i better off just plastidipping over how they are now?
better yet, sanding then plastidipping them?
Idk, lots of options. Just want to defend myself from pesky rock chips in the future! thanks for all the help!

i have no experience with painting so i am certainly not the best to listen to but that being said, i plasti-dipped my HL, TL, Grill Surround, even the chrome fish gill stock grill and they all came out great. I would imagine if you were to sand, prime, re-paint, they should agruably look better, but plastidip is just so easy, and easy to re-do.
Uncl3, how much did it cost for you to get yours professionally done?
and did you get them painted gloss black? I like the idea of plastidip being durable, but i hate how it will look different from my mirror caps and roof

I have a friend that is an auto painter that does side work so I got a great deal. I think I paid around 60 bucks for the front and rear rings along with side scuttles and front grill trim. I gather something like this would probably cost around 200-300. I had all the parts painted body color.

Professional painting is expansive unless you know someone. You can try Lyles Vinyl Wrap

We've painted quite a few sets for NAM members. You can expect to pay between 200-250 bucks from a bodyshop. We charge 150 for fellow members.
If you paint the chrome, you need to sand them with at least 800-1000 grit paper but more importantly, once sanded, you need to spray the parts with a prep like zinc chromate so the primer will have something to stick to.
Typically, we tell customers not to paint chrome. It's not that you can't, the chrome dipping on plastic parts is soft, (I even painted my chrome grille on my H2 to match the white on the truck)
After all the highway driving, it's not so much as chipped.
