Xenon auto leveling after lowering springs

well, just recently lowered my car on nm springs.

I've noticed that my headlights are aimed pretty low compared to what they were before the lowering. It's almost dangerous. If a car is like 6-7 car lengths in front of me, the lights don't even reach their rear bumper.

I have no clue how these self leveling headlights work. Is there some way I could have screwed up the aiming of the lights by lowering? the nm engineering springs are supposed to drop the car evenly all the way around.

Could i just fix this by aiming the headlights higher? or will the auto-leveling feature just aim them back?

yes, just re-aim them, preferably on a long flat parking lot w/ someone in the drivers seat.
The auto-leveling simply compensates headlight angle as the load/angle of the car changes, you still need to have them aimed level with the car at rest.

interesting... i figured they'd have sensors in the front and rear, and equal lowering wouldn't affect the auto leveling...

i guess i'll be doing that some time soon.

There are sensors front & rear, but it doesn't take much on a short wheelbase to change your angle.
! Plus, the headlights seem to come aimed quite low from the factory, lowering the car makes it even more pronounced. Aiming is super easy, I believe it's a 6mm allen, and when they're set perfectly level you'll be amazed at how much better they work. I'd recommend everyone with Xenon's take the time to adjust theirs.

finally got around to this...

i just used a long screwdriver, using an allen key was a pain because of the small clearance. The plastic adjustment bolt has allen and phillips.

it was kinda a pain getting the lights level. Had to adjust, drive, adjust, drive etc. then pull up to a wall and make sure the cutoffs were level with each other. a lot nicer now though.

Xenon headlights aren't supposed to have a level cut off, the drivers side should be slightly lower then the passengers side. Since they are so bright the drivers side should be aimed slightly lower to reduce the risk of blinding on coming drivers.

they are aimed that way.

the high side of the driver cutoff is level with the passenger low side of the cutoff.

you can always adjust them up until people start flashing their lights, honking, or shooting at you, then turn them down a bit

Hey DWF, interesting that you had this problem. I haven't noticed a difference in mine at all! I wonder why this is? Anyways, glad to see you were able to share a fix with us.

probably because it's the middle of summer !
The Xenons (and possibly the regular halogens) are aimed very low from the factory, if yours are level, they were probably adjusted before delivery or at some point since.

yea, mine were really low. I wonder why I didn't realize it before the lowering. Maybe the dealer adjusted them when they did some warranty work?

and come to think of it, my headlights haven't "reset" themselves recently. weird.

your headlights should cycle through the leveling range every time you start the car, otherwise there's a problem w/ the system.
Hopefully you didn't damage either of the leveling sensors while lower the car.
