Time for someone else to pick up the mantle.
,,,we'll have to deal with the Germans and that's gonna be expensive. Maybe fellow NAMer, SMSgt Bo could help, he was my point of contact in Germany for these shifters before I dropped the project.

Well, FLP answers my emails each evening, and so far they are still interested in the project. I am sending them a stock shift lever so they can see what the dimensions and mechanism is. They are in California, and might need a car to check out.
I'll keep you updated as I hear anything.

just a thought, you might send them a photo of some of the above mentioned items for ideas

Santa Margarita Parkway, Mission Viejo.
Nothing new to report over night, sorry.
I did send them the link to this thread, but I don't think they are into raising the pivot point with a fancy German cage...

How else can it be done?

Well, if you want to do it properly, you have to raise the pivot point, obviously. If you want to do it half-arsed, then simply lengthen the lever...
Oh well.

I think the raised pivot point will be quite expensive and very limited sales due to it being so customized although it would be quite impressive.

The lengthened shaft would be a good compromise in price/sales/driving feel, win-win.

Here's a video of a Honda using the FLP long shifter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWDBnPG0z1k

The throw is not too bad (not a snick, though), but clearly it's fast and easy.

That FLP shifter is perfect, exactly what i was looking for in the earlier referenced thread.

A bit higher with the stock throw, put that light s-bend towards the driver to keep the high gears close and i'm in love.

I would buy one.

Hey all. Randy got me.

I'll get some pics up o my shifter in a few minutes.
Here is a "short" vid of me pulling out of the pits on one of the first test runs. Just shows a very little bit of the shift.
http://www.vimeo.com/4247776 Watch in full screen as the quality of vimeo is good.

Also, there is another vid there that you can see the shifter as the camera is shooting into the car. It's when I use the s##t word.

Be back in a bit with pics.

This was the prototype, but worked so well I left it in.
Very adjustable.

Cheez and Rice...
OK, how much to turn said prototype into production...haha.
As always Greg--sweeter'n sweet.

btw, this makes the two-cable mechanism I was trying to describe really easy to see. Those Germans hid most of it.

That is one impressive set up , even more so in person. Had we not gone the route we did I would have been first in line for a production unit .

I must have caught something from my 14-year old (not the swine flu) because I've lost interest in this. If I can't have one of those crazy German thingies, or at least one like Onasled made for himself, then I don't want anything at all...darn it. I'll just put my iPhone earphones back in and ignore the world. Maybe when I come to my senses, I'll have a metal shop in my basement and the skill to use it, and I can fabricate one for myself and take up a vendor subscription to NAM.
Or not.

Sorry, but once you've seen what can be done, anything less is not enough.

As soon as I get a "mule" to spec these types of mods on, and some more cash flow, I'll start with trying to fit a shifter like this is a more stock interior. Not sure it's too doable, but I will put some time into it.
I may be heading in the direction of bring the Mini community some very track worthy upgrades. Hope to have something 'big' on the track for a full days testing in early June with 'snid'. Depending how that goes, I may then move forward with other things.

onasled: i guess that the e-brake thing and cup holder get in the way of your very sweet shifter. i'll do w/out those and take one as it exists in your car. no further "polishing" required. shorten the e-brake handle and wrap your unit in carpet....done. we don't need no germans!

i really like the taller shifter

i would be intrested in one, i hate how sloppy the stock one is and the shifters out there arnt vary good i would still want to retain the stock trim like the first shifter there how it comes up out of the stock shift well i really like that one
