Can't help with the scratches, but look up "Black Wow" in the forums here or at www.showcardetailing.com. It's just what you need to clean up and "re-blacken" your trim.

I use a Mothers product that I picked up at a Auto Parts store here locally. Forgot the exact name but it stated it 'revives black trim to new' Works pretty good and last awhile. I apply it to my wheel arches and bottom molding about once every 2-3 months. Much as I try I get wax on the trim and it's a booger to get off. This stuff does that as well

Also I've heard good thinks about OctaneGuys Black Wow

Armor All works just fine. No need to go with the expensive stuff.

Anyone that uses the words "Armor All" in a positive context should be immediately and unceremoniously vanquished from NAM and sentenced to a lifetime of writing the sentence, "I promise never to allow an Armor All product to touch my MINI again".

And hey, OP, post detailing qustions in the Detailing forum and you'll get more and better answers. Black Wow is the stuff you need for your plastic trim, as Scott pointed out.

Get a grip and go buy yourself a sense of humor.

And if you see that as a personal attack, I feel bad for you and your perspective of life. Wow.

Maybe so. And don't forget to throw out the Armor All while you're at it. Your life will improve in multiple ways.

So.. let's talk about this armor all problem you have. I've been using it for 20 years on my pickup, and 7 years on my MINI. The vinyl pieces all look brand new. So what's the problem?

I used to use Mother's back to black. It worked well, as long as it was fresh. It always made the trim shiny, which was ok, but when the stuff aged, roughly a few weeks, it turned white.

Black Wow renews trim, keeps it a natural mat finish and doesn't turn white. Find a MINI buddy in your area and borrow some Black Wow.

Armor All? They are all about shiny this and shiny that. I used to use their tire wax, I still use some of their car wash soap and window cleaner. They aren't a bad company, it's just that sometimes, things aren't meant to be shiny, like interior plastics or leather seats.

The only "bad" thing about Armorall that people agree on is that it is "too shiny." People say that it will harm your plastic or make it look bad, but all the 'evidence' is anecdotal. I haven't seen any controlled experiment comparing it to other products (as far as I can remember).

It might not provide the best protection as other products like Black Wow (which is what I use, by the way), but I don't think it will hurt your plastic (i.e., make it worse than if you did not apply it).

I can certainly be convinced otherwise if someone shows me a proper study!

Here's and old thread about the same thing:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...armor-all.html

(P.S. I still have some Armorall that I use on my lawnmower and it looks darned good! )
(P.P.S. I agree this thread should be moved to detailing 101 and maybe Octane Guy can contribute some knowledge.)

Nothing is wrong if YOU are happy with it. But don't recommend it to others unless you know they prefer ultra-shiny, cheesy looking trim for a few days before it turns back to gray again.

Good choice.

Only a few vendors out there. Start with these....

Show Car Detailing
Outmotoring
Detailers Paradise

All are Dot Coms.

And don't get shocked when you see the price.

1. You get what you pay for.
2. A little Black Wow goes a looooooong way. I've had a bottle for over a year and I own 3 MINIs.

Agreed!

The apparent "fighting" only has to do with degrees--not in terms of first order disagreement. (Sorry I've had a glass of wine or two! )

I think if you want to go cheap and live with the shiny look, Armorall should work for you (unless someone can prove me wrong with non-anectodotal evidence!)

But if you want to spend a bit more for a product that will last longer and give a good-as-new appearance without the wet look, then go for the other products that have been mentioned. And if you want to go a step further and support a NAMer then go for Black Wow!

(Man, thank goodness for that edit button!)

Wipe the surface dry with an absorbant cloth after application. Shinyness goes away. Black will easily last until the next car wash.

"Shinyness" goes away ? If it does, you're taking all the Armor All with it. And it last all the way until the next wash ? Please tell me you wash your car more often than once every three months. But if you do, I'm not impressed with how long it lasts.

Keep using it though. I'm sure you have the nicest black trim around.
