Bonnet stripes, checkered mirrors and roof

I bought my R53 back in November (22nd), and my daughter has wanted me to add a few things since then. I started out with simple bonnet stripes. I couldn't stop there, so I removed the rear view mirror and added 1" squares to it that night. After that, I couldn't stop, so I cut out 1.5" squares for the side view mirrors. I went today and picked up 9" squares for the roof. KC (KCinBR) came over and helped with the install for the roof. I really appreciate the help KC! I'll get to the beltline blackout soon...

and two more of the roof:

Thanks again KC! I really appreciate the help!

Now THAT is a proper roof for a Chili Red MINI Cooper !!

Excellent.

Nice job on the mirror caps, too.

Thanks everyone. It was FUN! Granted, doing it custom took quite a bit longer, but very rewarding. After the fact, I see that my side view mirror squares are a little small (should have went with 2" squares), but I'm happy with them. I think I have $30 invested in all of it (including the beltline vinyl I'll be installing soon).

The 911 in the garage is an '84 Carrera (RoW - 'Rest of the World', i.e. Euro car).

Thanks Edge for moving my post for me!

Malcon, your photos were what I used to 'copy' the mirrors. I just didn't gauge the square size as good as I should. Still, I'm happy with them. I used the factory checkered roof install pdf to figure how large the squares should be to fit the entire roof (without a border).

Thanks again!

Here's a set for the 1st Gen, at least for the side view mirrors. Here ya' go: (I'm sure there are other vendors that carry these too) http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...or-covers.html

No problem. I just couldn't justify spending $134 on something I knew I could do for relatively free. Just gives me $134 to spend on something else!

you're so right, what exactly did you use to do it? where did you get the supplies? im just not very artistic or creative, and not confident in my skills. mine would end up looking all jacked up. yours turned out great. i may try to do it myself, because if i do screw up my caps, i can always resort to spending 134$ on new ones haha

That's exactly what I was thinking when I tried it. I went to my local vinyl sign shop and bought some vinyl. You could ask him/her to sell you 40-50 2" squares. The ones that are REALLY a pain in the rear are when you start to 'round the corners. I heated mine up with a hair drier, and then trimmed them as necessary. Make sure you don't cut into the cover though! Mine were in pretty bad shape, so I didn't worry about it too much. I'm sure someone else could give you a better how to!

Nice job. I'm gonna do the individual squares on the roof, but around my sunroof and not on it, so I'll need less material than you did.

Here's the pdf file I went by - http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/Ch...of%20Decal.PDF

Depending on how much the sunroof covers, you may only need 11 or 16 at most.

Good luck! The corners are what require the most work.

Hey guys... any time you're looking for OEM parts, always check out Morristown MINI. They're the cheapest place I've found OEM parts.

They have these mirror caps for $58.45 each.

Thanks for that link. It will be very helpful.

Well, see, thats the advantage of doing it one square at a time, and also not doing the middle of the roof. The 'squares' dont have to be square. My roof is black. I am, therefore, going to buy white material. I will measure the roof side to side and front to back, and divide so that there is always black at the corner. That way, I only need to cut straight edges for the white squares.

Oh yeah, that will make things easier! Post pics when you're done!
