How-To: Swap your stock chrome grill with the black aero grill.

I just spent 45 minutes searching these forums and found a PDF on another site so I thought I would post this for anyone else seeking instructions on how to swap out your stock grill for the black aero grill.

http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/MINI_aero_grill_install.pdf

I have not yet executed these instructions but will be doing so in a week so I will provide feedback at that point.

I posted these exact same instructions about 3 months ago. They work well with nice pictures.

Except that if you want the lower part (the mid-grille) to sit flush you have to do some serious Dremelling...

Agreed about on the serious dremeling - don't underestimate the amount of work involved in that mid-grille if you want it to look right. It took me a full day's work, but I really like the result on my LY/LY car.

What's dremeling? I know something has to be shaved in the mid part. Is it that thing ledge part?

Dremel-ing is like Hoover-ing, a verb made from a proper noun, in this case the rotary tool called a Dremel. Indispensible tool for working on a car, or anything else for that matter. You'll need a Dremel or similar (but really you shouldn't accept substitutes) to remove material from the actual mid-grille as well as material from the bumper in order for it to fit perfectly.

In addition to the work described in the document, I also wound up slicing and sanding about 1/4" off the front edge of the horizontal louver that runs across the bumper in back of the mid-grille. I had to do this to get the grille to fit flush on the bumper.

The good news was that this might result in a very small amount of additional airflow...

My point being that you wont get a perfect fit if you follow those instructions...
Expect to do some trial and error adjustments on the fly.
