DIY color line/ Schroth harness (pic)

Finaly got some pictures of our DIY color line and racing harness. It is a Schroth 4-point harness and the quality of this product is amazing. For the color line we used Duplicolor spray fabric dye. Worked GREAT! no primer and about 5 coats and it looks like this. It has been going strong in the heat and use with no signs of fading or scratching. enjoy!

ps. Pictures came out rather "grainy". For some reason i cannot get decent interior shots, so this is the best it gets.

That came out really sharp. Great job! Plus the color combo is really appealing too.

here... i took these two to show you a basic idea. The Schroth harness acctually utilized the factory seatbelt possitions so it is VERY easy. The rear buckles into the stock seatbelt in the middle and then bolts into the seatbelt base on the side. The front uses the bottom bolt on the driver side were the seatbelt bolts to the car and then uses the stock seatbelt buckle on the right side as you can see from the pics. I hope these pics help you see how it goes in. You can install and uninstall these in about 3 minutes (not kiding).

Hey Man awesom Job. I also did my own colorline. I also used Duplicolor, the yellow is a tad brighter than the stock colorline but I think you cant tell the difference. The stuff worked great, I just cleaned the surface first and no primer here as well its been like 8 months or so and holding up great. Thru winter and now hot hot hot summers. I just cant figure out what to use to clean it. A Technician got hit dirty hands on it near the key so I tried soapy water and nothing its not that noticeable but its there...anyhow.... If you want to see some detailed photos take a look at the Flickr photos link below in my Sig.

We use a Turtlewax product in a lime green bottle for all the interior including the color line. Works great for us ... i guess it depends on how dirty it is, but its worth a shot right?

Schroth for '07 MINI??

You're so right. The Schroth Quick-Fit and Quick-Fit Pro are very easy to install and very quick to put in and out after the strap tails are installed. The only problems I had were the heat in my garage that had me sweating like a pig and the size 50 torx driver that I had to run out and get.

I went to the link you posted and noticed that they offer Quick-fit harness sets for '02 through '06 MINIs but they pointedly don't offer one for '07 MINIs yet.

Did you manage to get one designed for an '07 or did you use their R50/R53 version?

we used the one for the R53... the only thing you have to do is file about 1/2" of plastic off the clip on the harness that clips in the drivers seatbelt clip. It is just a little wide to fit in the stock clip. It is VERY easy to file and you cannot mess it up. Once you have it in front of you and see it makes complete sense.

well the harness can be used in both cars.. the R53 just has a slightly wider "female" seatbelt clip on the divers right side. So you have to trim a little plastic (nothing stuctural). So when you go to purchase one you will not see anything that specifically says for R56.

Do you have any close-up pics of the part you modified?

Sorry i don't have a close up.

and i just searched "color line" in the interior section here and found a DIY on removal for the chrome accent rings since you have to remove the color line to get to those.

I definitely want one of these. Right now I use a CG lock daily. If I got this I am sure I would use it daily just because I like to feel locked in the seat and how much it helps driving. I've tried driving without the CG now and I hate it haha. Hopefully a nice xmas gift :D

How did you get these for your car? I didn't think they were available for the 2nd gen. MINI.

In fact the link says it will not work on the 2007 and newer cars.

OOPS>>>>>>>>>>guess I should read the other responses.....

I would be careful installing these in a new MINI as the product is not specifically approved for its use and could possibly effect any insurance coverage, especially if you do any track days.

Hey all,

I wrote an e-mail to the folks at HMS Motorsports, importers/sellers of Schroth Harnesses, to ask their opinion of compatability with '07+ MINIs. Here's what they had to say.

John,
Aside from the buckles being slightly different, we also need to test the seat and make sure the seatback is structuraly rigid enough to withstand the roughly 45° downward angle of the belts. WE have seats in testing right now, just waiting for the results. Hopefully within the month we’ll know a definite ETA.
Matt

I hope that helps!

I got a similar response from them a couple days ago. I'm waiting on the officially tested version to be released.

Concur. I've been emailing Matt once and a while, and although he didn't give me the details, he did say that they were still testing the belts.

Won't have them in time for my next BMW CC Advanced Driving School unfortunatelly...

I got an email update on it last week. They are making progress. No date yet though, but I can't imagine it being a lot longer. Sounded like testing had some issues along the way.

Gimme a Break!

Those guys are just stringing us along. They've been saying the same thing regarding the R56 harness since I first inquired in Oct '07:

"Oh we're testing it, it'll be out in a month..." Yea, right. When I see it for sale I'll believe it. I just hope I can hold my breath that long.
