Need help painting hood scoop
Hey guys-
I am on the fence about buying a primed hood scoop for my R56 MCS; I know that I could go with other altenatives that would be already painted but I am working with a tight budget.
Here is the setup and the question:
First, I do not have any experience painting any Auto parts.
I can buy a primed hood scoop for around $80.00, that I would have to paint.
What type of paint would I need? Do I need a reducer? What is the best method to apply?
One step back, on my stock hood scoop; I have a clear bra piece that I would like to resuse on the new one. Can anyone recommend a how to remove step by step procedure and reaply to the new one?
Lots of questions, thanks in advance.

Chances are.....if you havent ever painted car parts.....the scoop is gonna look out of place and probably wont match the hood. Achieving the smooth even finish as well as the deep clear coat is pretty hard for a begginer to achieve.....and i would assume that you don't have an actual spray gun which makes the task even harder as you would be just using rattle cans.
Best bet is to take it to an autobody shop

Quality paint job need a lot of work. No easy / simply steps here. Good Luck.
Go for it
I say go for it. Most of the difficulty in auto paint is the prep. If you are buying a new scoop - primed then a lot of that is done for you. So buy it - paint it and if it doesn't come out to your liking, sand it and re-shoot it. But with this off the car part you have a great learning project.
You can get rattle cans here: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint.asp
you need a can of base coat using the color code under the hood and a can of clear. Read the instructions carefully. (I've use this source several times and have had consistently good color matches)
I painted a replacement gen1 scoop for someone tho and their "ready for paint" scoop was anything but. So I did a bit of sanding, and some filling and reprimed it first..... A bit more work but not rocket science.

I also found a local place that asked to bring the scoop so that they can recommend a good black paint. Something not too glossy but not completely flat either.
I'll let everyone know how it turned out..
Absolutely, hope to have it ready before next saturday..
Ohhhhh then i guess i would say GO FOR IT. A lot of my worries were based on the difficulty of matching the paint to the rest of the hood. If you're going for a contrasting black....this doesnt really matter.
hood temps....
I've never seen a special high temp body paint.
Engine/exhaust - yes; brake caliber - yes; but they put the same paint on the bonnet as they put on a door.
Don't get people looking for something that doesn't exist.
Heck, if you 'force dry' some clearcoats you'll heat them up to 140f or more while wet
What do you think the inside of the engine compartment is painted with? Something different that the outside? It may not have clear (or as much) because that would be wasted $$$

Ok, I have started painting the hood scoop over the week. So far, the paint looks good. I have let it dried for a couple of days before handling.
Tomorrow I will be replacing the stock scoop with the new black one.
Any tips on how to remove the scoop? I have read that there are three screws..

I did ask the question if I was going to be able to wax over it, the answer was yes.
Below are a few pictures...
I bought the hood scoop primed from Outmotoring and painted it myself...
Not too bad..One week on the car and no signs of paint problems caused by heat..
