Brey-Kraus Fire Extinguisher Mount

Thanks to Octaneguy's writeup I decided to put in there mount in my car. However, I learned from his issued and decided to order a different extinguisher. I am glad I did! I ordered Griots Unit. Glad I ordered when I did, in the last handbook it went up in cost. Anyway, I am very please with both mounts. Octaneguy's writeup was much better than the instructions included and the Griots extinguisher's bracket did not need the extra adapter from Brey-Kraus.

The slider still has full range and I dont seem to have any rattle, yet.

Overall I am very please with the purchause and the extra peice of mind was worth the money.

Is it suppose to stick out that far? I have seen 3 of these installed and they all tuck under the seat front a lot more than yours does.

I think it's the angle of the photo that makes it look that way - I have one and it looks pretty much the same...

Has to mount far enough forward to allow your hand to grab the fore-aft adjustment handle...

They must have changed the mount in the last year or so, because I have seen 3 other installations and none of them extend out that far. Looking at them from your shot the bracket is probably 2-3 inches closer to the seat. Still enough room to unlatch it, but it doens't stick out as far........weird.

The BK mounting plate is only about 1-1.5" forward of the seat fore-aft handle - I don't understand how you could tuck it under more and not risk clearance issues...

Here's an older pic of OctaneGuy's install...

That one DOES look much closer to the seat - but look at this:

The fore-aft handle looks tucked up under the seat here - mine protrudes well in front of the seat and is roughly even with the height adjustment like in S Curvz pic - I think it's either variations in how the different seat models are made (locations of rails and controls vs. front edge of seating surface) or they HAVE modified the BK mount to clear the "new" fore-aft handle location... Hmmm.

any who? haha

I know the older minis had some electircal issue and what everything cost me it is far less than a new car. heck, it cost less than my pulley. In the last two months I have seen three cars on fire...I dont want that to be me.

If my car catches fire, 1st I'm bailing out & 2nd I'm gettin some hotdogs to grill. Burn baby, burn. I don't want a partially burned car. It's all or nothing.

is it safe to have tank filled with powder inside a car that can reach
temps in excess of 125F? that was the only concern i had with this
install.

i would place it in the boot.

Race cars do it all the time - not with powder - but with Halon and similar liquified gases which is what I'm carrying... Never heard of one going "POOF" in the heat... if the margin of safety on a pressurized FE cylinder is the difference between 100 and 150F, I'd be REALLY scared of them... I think they're a lot more temperature stable than that (though I don't have hard data to back that up...)

I don't think there is any potential problem here. I had one in my race car & my rally car for years & years without ever having one go POOF.

mine is just like blimey's. mine does face the other way for easy access.

Kenchan, when you're on fire it's hard to reach in the back.

im more concerned about electrical fire...which the first thing to do
is unplug the battery which happens to be in the boot in my car for
some odd reason.

i'm worried about me catching on fire. I can get anther car. If i hit the wall the battery will disconect by it self. the hot engine and gas are what i need to deal with.

I do HPDE's (High Performanch Drivers Education). The term racing is a no no. insurance companies really don't like that.

I finally got motivated - and confident enough in my welding skills - and cut down my B-K mount by about 2" to pull the extinguisher back toward the seat - I like it MUCH better this way - now the position looks more like the pic of OctaneGuy's... had to play around with the position of the extinguisher in the mount to allow enough hand clearance for the fore-aft handle - but it's MUCH better shorter... Still don't completely understand why this is different across different MINIs, but still suspect the different seats are positioned differently relative to the rails and mechanism...

I also have a Ford Bronco that has an extinguisher about 4 times bigger than that mounted between the front seats and it's never had a problem in any weather. I live in San Diego so it does get hot here in the summer.

A few things bug me about getting something as small as those extinguishers. The first thing is they are costly and a majority of them cannot be re filled or re checked. Extinguishers do go flat/bad after a few years.

Another thing is that if your car or another car does catch fire, your chances of putting it out with something that small are very low. Just popping your hood and trying to unlatch it could do major trauma to your hands and leg/crotch area. Once years back I came across a woman with her car beginning to catch fire. I worked in the same complex so I ran and got our bigger extinguisher. The fire was still very small and I used the entire big one. People driving by gave me the little ones from there car to help and I used about 4 of them. Finally the fire department got there and put 500 gallons or water in the car.

I dont want to come across as negative. I think the pics of that extinguisher look awesome and it's a killer idea on how to mount them.. But dont have too much faith in saving your car in a fire situation please. Your health is too valuable.

Bang110 - certainly good points - more good discussion on this topic in this thread.

If my car's burning, I'm running away. Unless I'm trapped inside. Then, at a minimum, the extinguisher makes a nice window breaker. And it might actually be useful in a small electrical smolder/fire... a little halon goes a good ways in those situations.
