Need help taking headlights apart

Hi, I am trying to do Joey's project and read the thread, but no success. I tried to heat the headlight at 200 degrees for 20 minutes but the glue barely softened. Then I tried 280 for 10 minutes but the glue still did not melt. Can you lead me to the right direction? Thanks

Alright here is the update. I tried 350 for 10 minutes, the outer plastic start to melt and the clear lens bubbled on the outer edge, but the glue barely softened. So... I dremeled and everything came out nicely. I am not worrying too much since I can reseal the gaps with JBweld. Now, I need to figure out how I can mount the projectors and make a cover for the top portion. Here are some pics, BTW I will paint the portions to satin black and hope it will turn out alright.

Not sure what kind of projo you have in the high beam, but I hope it casts the right pattern needed to be functional as a high. goodluck with the project

Thanks Marco and Snypr, I am trying to take my time to do this hopefully it will be completed by the end of next week. On the matter of the high beam, since I never use it except for saying hello to other Mini motorers, I will use all four projectors as low beam. I hope that the lumens will add up, my only concern is: since light is a wave or particles acts like waves depend how you want to interpret it, I am worrying about interference will happen and reduce the brightness. However, I think this is very unlikely to happen since the light is very dispersed.

LOL, Sid I don't know you how did it man. I even had a hard time slicing the adhesive at that tempurature. Dremel did a good job, took less than 5 minutes and I can reuse the chrome ring clips. Thanks for your advice none the less.

I'm so happy someone is doing a retro for projectors....rock on dude. If you need help, i have put in a lot of research about this project and could maybe help if you ran into problems.

And you probably already know, but www.hidplanet.com has amazing forums for retrofit projects [edit: d'oh someone just mentioned hidplanet ]

Please do elaborate...I'm not picturing the dremel technique...

Thanks Rally, you'll be the first one that I will bother if I have any question .

Sid, I cut around the outer plastic shell 2" from the front edge of the headlight, then pull off the inner chrome piece. Sorry for my English, sometime I have problem explaining stuff clearly.

I have a biochem test this wednesday, so I won't able to work on the project until the end of the week. I did however, figured out how to mount the projector with the ingenious design headlight by BMW made my life much easier. I think alignment the beam will be a pain in the arsh, but once it is done I don't have to mess with it ever. Detail pictures and somewhat detail write up will be posted once the project is completed. I can't wait

I have a set of taillights I modded many moons ago but never got around to mounting. I too went the dremel route, messy but fast. Just looked real close for the glue line, ground out a small amount, ground down the melted/welded tab spots (taillights only, haven't tried this on headlights yet) and they popped right apart. Used 3M HD adhesive to put them back together. I'm way too easily distracted to bake my lights.

Alright folks, completed mounting my first projector. I found out that alignment will be fairly easy since I can do it the front rather than back. Hard to imazing, but it will make sence when picture is posted. Will take detail picture for the second unit and hopefully up by tonight. Wish me luck

Couldn't you mount the projector to the original halogen reflector and then use the stock adjusters? That's how i had mine set up originally

I did not used the reflector either. I used the two air holes above, then used that as a guide to make the bottom two holes. All four anchor bolts have springs to keep the projector adjustable and sturdy.
