How To Drivetrain :: Alternate DoS Intake Install Method

This type of filter typically has a very long cleaning interval unless you live in very dusty/pollen-heavy conditions.
Here is some info concerning cleaning intervals from the K&N Website that should be helpful.
(from http://www.knfilters.com/faq.htm )

4. How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?
If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible. . . ."
All that being said, I still check the ones that I use every 10,000-to-15,000 miles. You can pull the CAI and shine a shop light into it's large mouth to see if you can still see the wire screen that holds the cotton gauze filter material in place.
Finally, remember to not over-oil the filter. It only takes a small amount of oil to recharge the filtration ability of a cotton and wire mesh filter. I like to use the aerosol recharger kits. One light pass across the inside and outside is all it takes.

Absolutly not, you do not want any oil or water coming close to the MAF. You must remove the cone and dissassemble the housing to remove the filter to wash and oil it.

Shipping a DoS CAI to the UK
This kit looks great! Been looking at a few different CAI's, all of the ones I've come across I'm pretty sure will suffer from horrendous heat soak but this could be the solution. Will it fit a UK spec car and is there anywhere I can get it in the UK? Thanks in advance
1) The DoS R56 CAI will fit a UK spec car. We have quite a few customers in the UK and Australia.
2) We ship orders to the UK 1 to 2 times per week. Drop me an email or PM if you'd like me to send you a shipping quote.
Have a great weekend.

woa woa wao... can't pass inspection with the DoS? what if I am in Texas? ahhh this is making me want it less. Can anyone help? This would be my first mod to an 07 MCS with stage 1 jcw kit. Oh and how much better is the DoS than the stage 1 intake system?

The original message I posted about the getting an additional bulkhead does pertain to the visual inspection that Clint mentions. I'm still looking at options of how I will do this when it comes to getting my car smogged, but considering I still have a few years to go before that happens, I'm thoroughly enjoying the DoS CAI in the mean time...

sunman pinged me about the CARB question earlier this year. We're going to file the paperwork for CARB exemption/certification in January 2012 and see if they'll allow us to do the testing locally. If they do not allow us to test at a lab in the Bay Area, we'll be looking for DoS customer in the LA metro that would be willing to help us out.
