Interior/Exterior :: Rear Taillight Joey Mod With Pictures

Well i dont know if this is something the rest of you want to try, but i thought i'd lay it out for you if some of you might be into it.

1 step.
You go to your local paint supplier, and buy some primer, and which ever color you want the inside of your light to be. I choose mat black.
Also buy some strong epoxy glue.

2 step.
Get some covering tape, a saw/drimmel.

3 step.
Remove the tail light from the car, this is done by removing the cover in each side of the car, removing the cable in top of the lighthouse after that remove the screw. And in the far corner in each side there at to clips which are to but pushed toward the trunk area.
After this, the light at to be simply pushed out.

4 step.
You take the from side of the light and start cutting along the edge of the plastic cover, start at the top, and the bottom, after that you will be able to rip it open, without breaking the cover.

5 step.
Clean the inside of the lamp, with a moist cloth and dry it. Now you simply cover up the areas you want to be visable when you're done,
keep in mind that the upper red light is your breaking light and should therefore be fairly large. Also make sure that your covering is straight and tight to avoid any odd shapes after painting.

6 step.
After you're done covering the lamp, start using your primer, just follow the instructions on the back of the can. Keep the lighthouse steady, to avoide uneven spots or bumps when it dries up.

7 step.
When your prime is done drying, it is time for paint, again follow the instructions on the back of the can. And again make sure the light house is even, and that you apply an even layer of coat to avoid uneven bumps and spots.

8 step. When the paint is dry, it is time to remove the covering tape, i suggest that you use a hobby knife, to cut along side of the tape, to avoid it ripping of some of the paint aswell. Glue up the cover again. Please make sure that the cover is free of any dirt etc. on the inside so you wont have to cut it off again. Then you mix your epoxy, and apply it along the side of where you cut it open the first time. Put the cover back on and let it dry.
Make sure the cover is under tension, to avoid it being glued on in a wrong way.

9 step.
Simply apply the lighthouse back in the car and screw the bolt back on. connect the cable, and put the trunk cover back, and voila a brand new taillight design.

To save time work on the other light, during drying periods after primer and paint. The whole process took me about 5-6 hours.

hope you like it!!
Enjoy.. :D

Thanks im glad you like it..

Well it's possible to do it with the headlights aswell.

But conseridering the fact that you might not be able to reassemble it properly
i would rather buy the headlights which are painted black allready.. got mine from ebay pretty cheap!

Here are mine that I did about a year ago. No opaque paint though. I used a spray tint on the actual red/orange lens.
