Me too! Except - I got mine from the MINI DEALER ! I specifically went to them because I thought the parts stores might not have the newest parts catalogs, and specifically asked them for the 2007 filters, and when I was in the middle of my oil change I discovered they gave me the WRONG ONES !

DOH !!! The dealer !!!

Z3bum, thanks for the great step by step and visual aids. It went smooth but i think i added too much oil. Added the full 5 qts, since i was waiting to see the oil from the pour hole or something.

Thanks again,
dave

Mine only took 4 qts. to hit the full mark. If you get everything out, it should hold 4.5 qts, but I'd think that's next to impossible, or if you could, you'd probably damage the engine waiting for the pump to suck up some oil and get it in the system

The service indicator used to say 16000 miles to service but after my first oil change at home it started to display 17000 miles instead and the date is pushed back, I think, to 06/2009.
anyone able to comment?

I am doing another oil change this week as the car hit 5000miles. I will take a note of that information before and after oil change.

Unless you reset the computer. The change from 16,000 to 17,000 was probably arbitrary, and most of the dates were set wrong (mine says 3/2009 which is 2 years from date of purchase), so if you got your car in 6/2007 they probably programmed the date wrong. I think it's impossible for the date to be calculated, since there's a date for inspection and emissions, and your car has no possible way of knowing when you got a sticker.

Thanks!

For an unscheduled oil change? Depending on the dealer, somewhere between $50 and $200. You're entitled to a free change with your maintenance agreement every year or whatever the onboard computer says (every 15,000-19,000 miles), whichever comes first. Maintenance agreements come with new cars for 3 years.

I changed my oil today at 5180 miles. This was the second oil change for the car and the first one was performed at 1200miles. The computer still reads 18000 miles 06/2009 so it didn't change. I didn't collect the oil for analysis this time but I will next time. When I emptied the oil into a gallon milk jar it was only a gallon. 1 gal = 4 quarts. That's how much I added last time! And the oil dipstick was at 'Max', the upper metal piece. This time I added a little less than 4.5 quarts and the dipstick reads about 1 inch above the max mark. So maybe the dealership is not overfilling them when the dipstick reads 1 inch above the max line.

Yes they are. The car holds 4.5 quarts, and there is almost no way to get it all out other than disassembling the engine. I'm not sure of what potential damage it can do, but I wouldn't put in any more than to the full mark on the dipstick.

I can drain a little out. When I loosen the drain plug the oil will come out slowly. Not difficult at all.

It might be interesting to see whether a Top Side Oil Changer or draining gets more oil out. Leaving half a quart in the engine seems odd.

After the oil change I drove around, warmed it up, and drove like a maniac on and off the exit ramp when there are no cars around. Came back and measured it after a few minutes and it was reading high. After posting the above message, I went out and drove the car out of the garage and checked the level again and it is at the max. All is good now.

You should wait at least five minutes after the engine has stopped before checking the oil level. Otherwise, a fair amount may still be up in the engine.

yeah, i just realized my dealer also sold me the wrong filter... i forgot to take a look at it when i bought it, not that i know what the r56 S filter looks like to begin with but when i got back, i compared it to an r53 filter and its the same thing

does anyone have the part number for the r56 S filter?

also, does it come with a crush washer or is that separate?

Here's a good post (from this thread) that has the info you're looking for.

This link implies that they are:
http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/G2.../InvDetail.cfm
I used one of these filters in my MCS.

I did my 1200 mile oil change this weekend. Here's what I bought at the dealership:

11 42 7 557 012 - Filter Element. It's labeled "1 Satz / Kit" with a BMW Group and Made In France sticker on the box. It is a complete kit; filter, crush washer, and o-ring. Oh, and it was $23

Cheers,
Jeff
