Hawaii SCCA Autocross resumes 12/17/06; 1/7 & 1/28/07

Thread title reflects newest dates after intial three events were completed 8/20, 9/3, 10/15

It's that time again for those that want to come out to watch or to participate-

Lets meet at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot area for a fun of driving around like crazy people - or at least try to.

For all the up to date info- please read
http://www.sccahawaii.org/
NEW- you must register online if you have driven in a solo event from last year- pre reg signups limited to 100 drivers only!!!!
If you are new to solo driving then you can do day of event registration but only 20 slots are reserved for this for the entire day.

There are four heats during the day (two in the morning and two after lunch)
Stock classes run in heat 2 (for those that have run in stock classes before)
Usually first timers run in the afternoon in either heat 3 or 4 with an instructor (can be 1 to 4 runs as you request).
If you have done at least one autocross in the past you don't get an instructor.
Helmets and shoes are required (no more anybody stealing my shoes so they can drive)

Three dates are now set for SCCA solo events-

All are sundays-

Aug 20
Sept 3
Oct 15 (edited)

Now I have to scrape off all that dust on my MINI!

Come one come all. Beginners are welcome. We will provide the coaching and guidance. Clean out your MINI since no loose stuff is left in the cars as they whip around the course. Think of it as an obstacle course where you need to miss the scary orange cones of death... or suffer a time penalty.

We used to have as many as 10 or 11 MINIs at one event. Yeow, that's alot of MINIs. I hope they haven't all found a way to have fun on Maui or the big island.

Generally autocross on a flat parking lot is much better than what we had to do on the track at Hawaii Raceway park. We are free to design some really nice courses and we have the space to roam. It's also newly paved... brings tears to my eyes.

I'm so happy to be back. So is my "blue monster"

Read on for more details...

minihune,

Do you know if, for instance, only 80 pre-register, will there be 40 walk-in spots available (for a total of 120)? If the final total is the key, it seems it will be. Since you are in-the-loop, thought I'd get a clarification.

Thanks,
D

I am checking with registration officials to get clarification.
I hope we will be allowed a total of 120 spots per event.
Pre reg is encouraged but walk up is possible but limited.
Remember you will need to bring a check and no cash will be handled due to new rules.
You can register in the morning for the afternoon event- once the limit is reached then no more registrations will be taken in the afternoon- this is a new rule by the stadium.

Thanks for checking. I luckily had at least one auto-x from 2005 so I qualified for the pre-registration and got my confirmation.

I never carry checks so I'll have to leave myself a HUGE post-it!

Pre registration online was brisk- about 50 in the first 24 hours then there were techinical difficulties but we hope to get it back up and running soon. Odds are the 100 slots for online will be used up by the end of the week.

If not then I think we will have up to 120 total slots for drivers for event day and only 100 of those limited to onlline reg. Once the 100 online slots are taken then all other drivers will have to reg on day of the event first thing in the morning would be best since it is first come first served.

There isn't much for auto motorsports on Oahu right now so I think it's likely many drivers will want to sign up soon.

Pre registration to open again on sunday

Here is the latest on pre reg for past solo drivers-

------------------
If you pre-registered but did not receive a confirmation email, you will need to pre-register again (sorry, AOL email problems).

The pre-registration link on the website www.sccahawaii.org will reopen on
Sunday, 8/13 at 9am until the 100 limit is reached. There are only 25 spaces left.

Don’t forget you need to pay for your registration with either a check or money order (payable to SCCA Hawaii), NO CASH will be accepted.

Food & drinks:
  •
    • Only drivers will be allowed to bring in their own food and drinks.Driver’s food & drink must be consumed in the pit/track area.
    • Non-drivers must purchase food and drink from the swap meet vendors, no outside food allowed.
    • SCCA will no longer be selling fundraiser soda or water.
----------------------------------
Please don't delay-
Otherwise you will have to fight for the last 20 slots on the day of the event!!!!!! :impatient

Today is the day.

We have 100 pre registered drivers.

Gates open at 6am for day of event registration for those who did not pre register. Only 20 drivers will be allowed to register today up to the 120 limit.

If a pre registered driver in heat 1 or 2 doesn't show up by 815am this morning (or by 1215pm for heat 3 or 4) then that slot will be given up to a driver that registers today (on standby). We will use all of our 120 driver slots.

Spectators are welcome and will park their cars outside of the autocross area- only drivers and support crew can park in the lower parking area.

If you bring tents you cannot damage the asphalt of the parking lot, you have to bring weights- it's very windy.

I think some drivers trying to register today will have to start lining up before 6am.

Hope to see you there. We will close down and clean up by 6pm.

HOT but good fun. At least there were no bugs and dust storms.

The folks in heat 1 were lost the first few runs. I think those who worked the course on heat 1 were at a big advantage as they could see where everyone was messing up at and where they could go flat-out. I worked heat 2 and it was great seeing minihune kick-okole (man he's a great auto-xer!). Mike W. and Adam L. (now with Corvette) were out there in heat 2 too. Bgrpph and I were in heat 1.

minihune, thanks for the heads-up on where I DNFed on my first run. I DNFed my second run too as I went too far out but finally settled-in on my last two runs.

Were you running clear tails? KHON loved Barry's car as it was the focus of their footage.

What's this I hear about a tent being taken out?

I do have clear tails. My wife said she saw Barry's car too. That crew was only there during our heat (number 1).

I dunno, sounds like something happened during heat 3 or 4. I was LONG gone.

The tent went flying due to insufficient weighting to hold it down on a windy day. So no unattended tents during the heats and all four legs need secure weighting at all times.

To all those that attended-
Thanks a bunch, we figure we had 120 drivers. Plus another 160 spectators. Those who signed up but didn't arrive lost their spot to walk up stand by drivers. And in addition to loosing their spot- those drivers also will loose the ability to pre register for the next event.

Latka was there all day snapping pictures. Thanks Andy.

We had four MINI drivers.

Though it was a much shorter course than at Hawaii raceway park there were some switchbacks that we could never do in the past. Only one slalom and one Chicago Box.

We will be making some design changes to make better use of the parking lot area where the surface is smoothest while staying clear of the loose gravel in the older area.

Nice to see a couple of visitors from the Big Island (Ken) and from Maui SCCA.

For the next event on Sept 3 please watch the SCCAhawaii.org site for online registration (for previous drivers only), it will probably be open only for a few days in order to reach the 100 driver limit.

Unattended tent? I heard a Camaro plowed through the timing table and ended up under the tent due to loose gravel at the finish. It got sterilized on FH by one of the SCCA Mods.

If that's what happened, sh*t happens. Live and learn.

Yes, Loose gravel was swept away but difficult to completely eliminate.
As a result we will be using the good asphalt area for the finish and avoiding the older areas.

For the next events if you want to sign up-

Please note:

Pre-registration information for the following events:
  • 9/3 event will start on Friday, 8/25 @ 6pm until Sunday, 8/27 @ 6pm or until the 100 driver limit is reached.
  • 10/8 event will start on Friday, 9/8 @ 6pm until Sunday 9/10 @ 6pm or until the 100 driver limit is reached.
There will be 30 spaces for walk-up registration on the date of event. Pre-registration thru www.SCCAHawaii.org site. Check website for pre-registration rules.

The design of the last corner into finish was a little crazy. Hopefully those involved can look at what happened and re-design things for next time. Nobody was seriously injured in the drive through scoring incident... and the car was only scratched a bit from what I could see.

The flying tent thing was kinda junk though. :( I don't know the guy's name but he has a pretty nice red A2 VW GTi. From what I was told one of those "easy up" tents wasn't properly secured and flew into his hatch window shattering it. Put a small dent into the hatch surround from what I saw too. So - if ya go & take a tent with 'ya please make sure it can stand up to some good wind gusts!

Man it was hot hot hot out there. Thankfully there were no mosquitos though. What a welcome change from the feeding zone that HRP was.

The track looked fun (I only walked it a few times). Took a quick look through my photos last night. I think I got all the MINIs that were out there. I'll have to post 'em up today. As usual, Brad and Barry were out there givin' it large. Some crazy bosozoku type in his silver MINI was running around too. Too samurai to approach though. Only grunted and never smiled. Heheheh...nah, just kiddin Dirk. It was good to see all you guys out there. Looks like you had tons of fun running your cars!

Man it was KILLIN me not to drive yesterday. I talked with Alli about it and she said we can keep the '66 Cooper S for a while longer. Now I gotta get ahold of a set of wheels, tires, new shocks, and maybe some adjustable height suspension trumpets + cones. Oh - and get a louder exhaust. This almost stock stuff just doesn't cut it. My buddy was pretty funny...there were a few kinda loud cars out there - he turns to me and says, "You know how you were asking how loud your '71 Mini was? It was louder than that." Hahahah...sweet! :D

It was kinda funny seeing all the DNFs in heat one. The lack of attention by some of the corner workers was kinda scary, but I already brought it up with a few of the stewards and they said it'd be taken care of. Jeez... you'd think that just by being out ON the track people would automatically pay more attention.

Yay. Solo II fun.

Oh! Got to meet Bad Jonnie and his better half. Their purple people eater Innocenti was tres cool. Can't wait to see more Minis out there amongst the MINI barges. :D

minihune,
Is pre-reg only for people that ran this past race? Or still the same requirement as the first pre-reg (i.e. - as long as you participated during the 2005 season)?

I will double check but I think if you have run this season in event one you can now pre reg online for the rest of the season.

Let me get a reply.

Remember that if you do pre reg and you do not show up you can no longer pre reg the rest of the season.

Answer-
Pre-reg is for those who participated in a regular event for the 2005 or 2006 season. So if they were able to participate in last Sunday’s event as a walk-up registration, then they now qualify to pre-reg for future events.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

Attached is information for the 9/3/06 Solo event…please pay special attention to the following:

Solo event gate will open at 7am (not 6am).
ALL tents MUST be attended at all times and securely anchored with eights.
Bring your own trash bags and take your trash with you…do NOT use the Stadium trash barrels.
Only designated medical personnel for the Solo event can contact 911 in case of an emergency.
There will be 30 open slots for day-of-event registration on a 1st come 1st serve basis.
Pre-registration for qualified drivers will start on Friday, 8/25 @ 6pm and end on Sunday, 8/27 @ 6pm or earlier if the 100 drivers limit is reached.
Hopefully that's without all the formatting characters and stuff.

Uhm... bring your own trash bags? Jeez. Can't bring food unless you're driving, and now the 7,000 trash barrels that are out there can't be used?

Only medical personnel can call 911? It'd be nice to know just who in the hell those people were... and I'm going to go ahead and say that I think that is a *completely* stupid rule. If someone is hurt and I'm nearby, you can be damn sure that I'm going to call 911. I'm a big boy and I can give directions to where we're at.

... just look at the incidents towards the end of the day when the SCCA people couldn't get the corner workers to wave their flags - do you really think that we could relay a message *back* the other way to get someone to call 911? The speakers on the announcing tent were all facing the wrong direction, too. If you're going to put the spectators a hundred yards away, at least point a speaker at them.

Don't get me wrong here - I'm very happy that we have a temporary facility to run at, and I hope that I can drive in the very near future - but holy crap man... what kinda random rules are going to come next?

The rule on calling 911 is the stadium's rule (not our idea)- we are required to designate a person (medically licensed in Hawaii)- to serve that role. That person was assigned and we will put it in writing and make a mention of it at the driver's meeting so that we are complying with Aloha Stadium. That person carries a radio every heat and knows that we will call when needed. Additionally I keep track of the location of the medical person each heat.

Each trash can was pre-lined by the stadium staff and each trash bag used needed to be emptied and cleaned up (or replaced) just how we found it in the morning. Roughly that was about 20-25 trash cans we cleaned up, hauling out about 4 bags of trash for the day.

This is in stark contrast to Hawaii Raceway park that allowed us to use the trash cans and had staff to do the cleaning up. This is not the case at Aloha Stadium- the stadium rules are different. We don't recommend that you use the stadium trash cans and bags as you will need to clean them all up at the end of the day and restore them to how you found them at the start of the day.

For now we need to abide by the rules and complete the probationary period. Lets all pitch in and do what we can.
