Powder Coating

Does anyone know of a Powder Coating vendor, on Oahu, that they'd recommend? I've got some pieces that need color.

Sears has a new powder coating gun out. On sale, too: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00917288000

No they won't ship to Hawaii but I saw it at Pearlridge.

The Sears gun...

That'd be cool to have.... but I'd need an oven. I'd also hate to learn on an expensive set of rims.

yah, you can do white...probably like 2 or 3 variations. you can even do candy colors! don't you want a candy apple green rim?

I am seriously interested in getting this little powder coating gun...but need to check online to see where i can buy the powder coat and how cost effective that is. cause if it will cost me about $30/wheell to do...might as well hit up hi-tech or sunset...

Not only that, each wheel would need to go in the 400 degree oven for 30 minutes each! Will a wheel even fit in the oven?

Yah...true. I watched them prep a wheel for powder coat once, and they hang it up in a big huge oven. chance are, I won't be able to hang a wheel in MY oven!

Powdercoating

Maybe we can use the oven at my friend's (on this board as Nimrod) house while they're out of town...JUST KIDDING!

I'm in the process of getting estimates for my wheels. I'll let you know what they come in at.

hi-tech quoted me $25/wheel and sunset quoted me $30/wheel. that was about a year ago. but if a bunch of us want to go in, i could call and see if they would do a "group buy" type of deal.

That's cheap! Isn't it usually $75 each?

Sears only has 20 colors so far but it's $5.99 per 7.5 sq ft (in powder coating the object is charged so the spray comes around and coats the back of it). Figure ~$3-6 per wheel, but the hard part is choosing which color and texture you want; other companies carry lots more colors.

If you make a mistake, don't bake it. The powder brushes right off. And a wheel is about the size of a fat turkey... something like an angel food cake pan could be used to support the wheel from its centerbore. I'd strongly recommend an electric oven because gas ones generate tons of water as a combustion byproduct, which may affect the finish.

Honey! what's baking in the oven?
No peeking, it's a surprise!

So who will have a range from Goodwill in their yard? Heck, you can probably drive around Makiki and pick one up for free...

If we could do a group buy count me in. I want to get some s-lites in black. 300 for a set is nearly as expensive as the rims on eBay tho'!

I had my wheels done! Since Sunset was so unresponsive to my inquiry, I decided to go with Hi Tech out at Cambell Industrial Park.

I was very fortunate to get in between to large batch jobs (of escalator steps) they had scheduled and dropped off the rims on Tuesday afternoon of last week. I was very suprised when they called me on Thursday and said they were ready.

I hurried over their shop to pick them up and was a little unhappy with the color they turned out. The color I had selected, using samples similar to paint chips, was darker and less blue than the color that the rims came out. However, the people at Hi Tech were very cooperative about helping to resolve it. We will be ordering custom color that I will pay for and they will prep and shoot the wheels again for free. The quality of the work was great as was the attitude of the companys' employees.

The cost was $75 per wheel and I will post pictures as soon as another issue (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=58166) is resolved.
