Lucky We Live Hawaii
Erik,
You said it! Too bad we don't get to confirm none of the freezing condition problems we see in many of the threads being posted.
Only thing though, we miss out on the winter activites (but I guess that is what vacations are for) and winter wonderland "things" like this :

The above was sent to my wife by her friend that lives in Alaska (the girl is a Hawaii transplant that works in the Environmental field of the oil industry). Talk about freezing your okole off!

i'm just happy to be not in north dakota. especially this past week when i heard that they were some 20-30 degrees below zero, with wind chill 60 degrees below or greater. the whole 3 years i was there, i only went thru 1 major blizzard where it got to 20-30 below with wind chill. wind chill advisory was a few times where we had to make sure we covered all exposed skin, lest we lose that part to frostbite within supposedly a few minutes. lucky, lucky me. i feel sorry for all those poor bastards from hawaii over at u. of north dakota physical therapy or aviation school now. at least they've got some survival stories to tell their kids.

holy crap! are those clowns from that jackass show? if not, they should enter that stuff on america's funniest home videos. or is that show already extinct?
that clip reminds me of some clowns trying to get their chevy s-10 into the 4-wheeling area over at alan davis - the dirt/grassy roads right across the hawaii kai golf course near sandy's. i was cruising by when i was halted by some teen standing in the middle of the road. he was halting traffic in both directions to allow a real 4x4 drive p/u to try and free their poor p/u that was stuck ontop of a big hump. somehow that s-10 has gotten its front end over that hump, but unfortunately it didn't have the ground clearance to make it all the way over. anyways, i had front row seats to a comic show. basically, like this video, the poor s-10 was doomed from the beginning. unlike this video though, there was no rear bumper being ripped off. instead, his frame looked like it was adjusted a few inches as the 4x4 gassed it, took up the slack in the rope rapidly, and nearly ripped off the s-10's frame. needless to say, they stopped after hearing that horrific creak/crunch/pop. then, i was able to pass as they gave up that effort.
back to the thread...another thing we're lucky to not hafta worry about is the killer flooding in the spring when all that snow melts. yeah, we had our share of flood damage, but it doesn't compare to the mainland, especially in flat rural areas like north dakota. the main river, red river, running thru town floods annually like clockwork. luckily for me and my classmates, our great dean of med school lives right on the river. so annually he requires assistance to sandbag and protect his house and property. so one afternoon our class decides to finally help this bastard. only thing is my friend and i get lost, and we get stuck in some crappy mud/snow combo stuff. and lucky me, since i'm the only passenger, i gotta push. and yes, i get the car out only after i fall flat in the crap as the car gives way. and we didn't even get to the damn house. we could have gotten on cnn as that night they showed und students sandbagging this clown's house.
oh yeah, with all the flooding and eventual ponding, comes the worst scourge of them all...hourdes of monster mosquitos.

strange thing is after being up in dakota for 3 years, i somehow actually prefer the winters now vs. summers. in dakota the winters are actually quite beautiful though at times they can be ridiculously chilly. summers in dakota are hot, humid, boring and full of insects that make going outside miserable anyways. so we just end up staying indoors. plus there's the threat of tornados.
here in hawaii, i kinda prefer winter more cause of the relatively cool weather. plus everything is nice and green. an added bonus is that since the north and west shore is raking in the swells, my fave breaks are pretty much uncrowded with only the locals in the know being out. ontop of this, the conditions are often prime during the winter, with glassy mornings or straight north wind days dominating the calendar. all in all, much more peaceful and beautiful scenery during my winter surf sessions. and all shared with a few familiar faces.

Lets hope for some good weather for the upcoming three day weekend. It's spring break so the traffic has been lighter all week.
It's almost fun to drive again. Give it a try!

ahhh...today was a perfect reason why...nice summer swell, bright blue skies and clear blue water, green mountains and valleys, passing white clouds, and near perfect off-shore trade winds to cool us off.
and to top it off, for a sunday morning session with only a few guys trading rides, it's kinda hard to imagine it being any better. oh yeah, finishing it off with some cool shave ice from kokonuts.
can it be any more relaxing than this?

That hail storm left more than 50 small dents mostly on his bonnet and roof. Can't imagine how that would be- like a bunch of little coconuts falling from a palm tree on my MINI on a windy day. Or maybe some tree limbs falling in a storm. Yuk. Can't dodge hail very well.
