get to hawaii raceway park around 8:30. coming at the lunch break may involve a wait as lunch is not at a fixed time, plus you may miss your heat. cost is $20 for non scca members. bring a helmet or one can be borrowed(in this case, bring a rag to put on your head) hmm. a checklist would be good huh:

- sunscreen
- chair
- umbrella
- water
- tire pressure gauge
- shoes (running type...then you can chase cones)
- shorts and shirt
- TP..... hey, you never know.
- $20 + ($1 for every fun run)
- food or $ for lunch break
- patience (there are always holdups)
- remove spare tire......wait a minute...all excess weight
- something to do if you run in the latter half of the day. good reason for an in dash TV
- paper towel and windex (for removing #s)
- clay magic for removing cone smudges
- you want more than 1/4 tank of gas when you get there, not when you are heading there. i say half a tank is good enough.

pm me if there are any questions.

Latka sometimes goes I think.
Not many other takers. Not certain why.
People have stock and upgraded MINIs but few want to go to SCCA.
This might be a good thing to pursue in the MINI club- has a SIG (special interest group) for SCCA.
Maybe DaKineMINI will go someday. He has experience.

What is this event? I checked out the Hawaii Raceway website, it wasn't very descriptive.

watch this video from one of them(credit to avery tsui or dean).

http://www.hula.net/~avejoy/DeansRunWeb.wmv

the car is a 240z. the video shows it inside and from outside pretty well. you actually only hit maybe just over 50mph depending on the layout that changes every month. it is a coned course that goes from turn one to the pit. there is usually about 3-4 slaloms (varying distances) and many many types of turns. all packed into a 55ish second run. very exhilarating without the highspeed solid object dangers. basically you will get into second and stay in it through the whole way through.

the following is from the site at http://www.hawaiis.com/scca

Solo II (Autocross)
"Solo II events are a low to medium speed event; they are often run on parking lots and airport runways. Generally a course will be defined using traffic cones; time penalties will charged for disturbing cones. In most regions, the penalty is 2 seconds per cone. There is an upper speed guideline for Solo II which is intended to keep speeds in a domain that most drivers might have encountered on the streets and highways; the fastest cars at a Solo II should not get much over 70mph."

again, no one even comes close to going above 60.

$20 bucks for a fun day to apply the lessons learned at driving school.

Thanks for the site, video and info.
Sounds good and maybe we can get more MINIs out there regularly.
I know one of the driving school instructors said that for SCCA there were not many MINIs at all.
What about the various classes based on upgrades??

yeah, i've been back for the past 7months and i don't recall any trying their car out. that EB one i mentioned in the other post showed some interest but wanted to mod his car for some reason first. this weekend there will definitely be a couple out there.

like i tell everyone that goes down to just look. if you wait and say next time you'll try it, that next time you will be saying damn, i should've done it the last time. there is no good reason to not try it if you are already there. actually, there may be a valid reason. you might get hooked and lose a sunday every month + $20 dollars. and buy a customized mini flame helmet.

remember. the bare minimum

-shoes
-$20
-sunscreen
-water
-thin rag/towel to cover your head if you use a rental helmet
-open mind.

for the beginners a very experienced person or instructor will ride with you for the first run and the rest if you want.

hey erik, let me know when the 16's are ready for me.

hmm. custom helmet with flames. give me a blank helmet and i'll try to draw a red/orange triangle with a black triangle inside of it and it will look like a flame with my skills.

i would say take it to a airbrush place if you want a serious looking helmet. b

ps. don't buy used helmets unless they were purchased very recently. sorry, i forgot the snell and dot approval date minimum.

Thanks a lot for your artistic offer, baronious  . One more (& hopefully last) question:

*Where would you recommend one buy a helmet from?

Lolo question but I'm fully green at this

Snell 95 is the oldest rating that BMW CCA will accept.

Where to buy a helmet? Lots of places. Start at motorcycle shops locally as you should try on the helmet for @ 20 minutes to see if it gives you a headache. If it does, it's too small.

As for a helmet bag, I got a military flight bag for my helmet. Just go to the military surplus shop on Sand Island. They have new and used, but buy the new ones.

I picked up a snell 2000 helmet (motorcycle) from Honda on Nimitz months ago for about $150. Doesn't cause headaches as far as I know- maybe that would make me drive faster so I can get out of the helmet. Interesting theory. Maybe I should put a wasp in the car for the same reason? Might be a slight distraction on second thought.

I'm not sure what is the reason there are few takers for SCCA but I think that given enough positive encouragement there could be a core of MC and MCS owners willing to get out there for solo2.

Like I need to spend $20 each month for a track event? It's a good thing I am in Scotland.

I am considering attending the September 21 event ... sounds like fun. $20 is a cheap price for a few hours of fun.

Also, interesting discussion there about decorating the helmets. According to the safety info that came with mine, they can't guarantee the integrity of the helmet if any sort of adhesive is applied to the helmet surface (presumably like that on stickers or decals). But paint wouldn't harm the surface?

my apologies folks. mini-t will be taken off the roll call list for scca. i'll try to make up to the people who are now interested in going by offering the use of my rims i just got mounted with autocross compound tires that i used a few months back, already mounted and ready to go. the rims are stock 16's and the tires are 1" shorter that will give a better gearing effect. you will be able to stay in your stock class with this. email me at b_drift@hotmail.com if you are interested in using them this sunday. Kohu'ulaMINI has first dibs on them as he showed interest in going first. i will still be there in my usual car as i cannot afford to lose the season by not showing up. so if anyone wants a fun run ride at the end of the day, let me know.

gotta get to work now.

hey randy.

my usual car is a wrx wagon. full suspension, zero power mods, not even an intake or blow off. yeah, it is the car a lot of people say to get if they gripe about a mini. hey, it's my work vehicle. i'd rather get a laundry bin (neighbor)slamming into my wagon before my mini.

remember a seasoned veteran doesn't mean good. but it will make for a wild ride. nothing wrong with 4 wheel slides.

we'll meet up tomorrow. thanks b

Much Mahalo baronious for the use of the race tires/wheels

Took awhile getting used to because they were a lot more compliant then the run-flats and way more stickier!!

I had lots of fun considering my first run was my quickest and 3 DNF's after
Thank goodness for ABS or I would have been "rallying" at the end of the off camber turn

Thanks again for the wheels/tires and, hey, mini-t, I think in the next event you should scrub your own race tires and not me

hey randy. you are very welcome. yes, hopefully mini-t will "scrub" the tires off herself next month, but that is up to her. yeah, i took the final slalom the wrong way in my first run and had to make that extra turn.

bummers. looks like my (2) 50.7x times (before the 1 and 2 cones) would've been very very very good. to add insult to injury, they messed up my final 4th run when i babied it to make a clean run. i did not hit a cone. they guy working the first half of the course who called in the other cones said it was clean and mini-t who was at the trailor said it was clean and no one called any in either. oh well. i would only dispute it if it was the 50.7 runs. basically, my real time should've been the 4th(sixth) run at 51.625.

next month the EBBB MCS(Electric BurBarry Blue) will debut. if mini-t doesn't run, maybe i'll run 2 classes. b

hey randy, the results are up

http://www.hawaiis.com/scca

darn. i could've been 6th overall, was supposed to be 12th overall, and was wrongly put at 21st overall. i got bad karma.

i just ordered a seat for my MCS. a recaro SRD. if anyone wants one let me know. was about 680 shipped here including bracket and slider. full black with red stitching and lettering. hopefully it will get here before the next one. hopefully i fit in it. i gotta go running again. b
