Hello MINI Hui Members

After the first meeting today, I had thoughts about Darell's comments on the name for the MINI Club of Hawaii. I propose we amend the name to "Hawaii MINI Hui" , Anybody have any comments or in agreement with this idea?

The turn out was good , we got about 12 interested parties. mini-t if you are interested then send PM to Sadie on your phone numbers and reg email address.

Another though on name would be "MINI Hui Hawaii" just in different Order. Just sounds better to me. I like having Hawaii and Mini in the name.

My daughter and I will be working on ideas- stay tuned.

Me likes it!!
Darrel made some important points....having 'Hawaii' included in the name makes it more distinguishable.

Hawaii MINI Hui...think of the logo possibilities HMH

My MINI gets picked-up tomorrow (by TNT Transport) for it's journey to HI. They say it will take four to six weeks!

SouthSeaSadie,
I sent you a PM with my information, please keep me in mind for the MINI HUI.

ummm...
Are we sure about the usage of the Hawai'ian in our name? What is the modifier? In english it sounds like we want 'MINI club'. Wouldn't this be HUIMINI or HUI MINI O HAWAI'I (if we add Daryl's suggestion) in Hawai'ian? 'Club of MINI' or 'MINI club'? From what i've learned the modifier is second.
HUI MINI O HAWAI'I, has a nice ring to it but I hope we're not listed under 'halau' in the yellow pages!
I'll check with my sources if someone else can also do the same.[*]null

MINI of HAWAII is the actual MINI dealer (in Hawaii)....like MINI of the Hamptons.

Hope this clarifies any ?????.

ALOHA!

I'm not familiar with the native language but if this is the correct 'usage', yeah, it has a nice ring to it.

It would still fall under the acronym....H M H

beeps, i think you have a point there.

I am in no way an expert in the Hawaiian language or culture, but I would think that proper usage is important. Has anyone considered if using Hawaiian words in such a manner may even be disrespectful?

It just seems that whenever Hawaiian names are used for a club or title it's because it is reflecting something that is of the Hawaiian culture, such as a hula halau, a canoe club or Hawaiian band.

IMO, I think the club name should be a catchy acronym, like MOCHA (Mini Owners Club of Hawaii Association)

Great minds think alike! I brought up the 808 stuff at the meeting on Sunday. Do you still need driving lessons?

Who doesn't need driving lessons? Most of us could learn more. Takes a bit of driving to get better. Like anything, even if you think you are doing good, you are only as good as your true skill level is. Relative to other people you don't know where you are. Get an experienced person to go with you and then get feedback.

She is doing fine. I saw her drive. So far I give her an A. She is putting in her miles and coming along. Now- if she can- Here is her next assignment. Get a small plastic cup. Fill it half to 2/3rds full of water. Place it on the dashboard center and drive the car around without spilling a drop. Maybe we should do a car rally with water cups on our dash boards? Anybody try this at home?

Sorry, I got there late on Sunday and didn't hear the comments or suggestions about the possibilities. The attendees did vote on MINI HUI and I didn't mean to open a can of worms about it.

808mini sounds good and identifies us in a subtle way. It goes along the lines of mini 5-0, which would have been my choice. I think the 5-0 designation would have instant recognition nationally and maybe even internationally because of 'that' TV series. It's subtle, reminds our brethren that Hawai'i is a part of the 'USA', and minihune's daughter could design a badge for us!! Way cool!!

I agree that if our group wants to idendtify us by using the Hawaiian language it should be done properly. However, we are trying to set up our club with a name that will be recognized and marketed in an english language enviroment. To me "hui" adds a little Hawaiian connection to the club name yet reflects that we are about MINIs in Hawaii. I still think our club name should be "Hawaii MINI HUI".

How about:
HUI MINI HAWAII ?
Would that be proper?
I would rather we be proper when using Hawaiian language.
Once we finalize it we can try to check with someone that knows the language just to be sure it isn't the wrong meaning.
Which reminds me of reading some of those english ramblings found on some Japanese toys like Hello kitty. It is
incomprehensible stories obviously written by a non native speaker of English.

Yes we did vote but if you have a great idea we are open to hearing from you. We did not sign any documents yet or commit to any designs. It was just the first of many meetings. And I think that even after we come up with a neame we will see how it works and make some adjustments if the group feels this is the way we want to go.

HUI MANINI? a group of small fish? Or is it a small group of fish? I will have to check my "Finding Nemo" dictionary.

I thought about getting a license plate with "MANINI" on it. I like it but I am not sure other people will think it is a positive name or not. Now "MININI" - I like that one. Has the MINI in it and the play on Manini. Maybe. I'll check with my kids- my judgement on names is clouded once I am on MCO for too long.

Aloha y'all, I'm an expatriate and like reading stuff to keep up on what's happening in Hawaii. I just placed an order for my MCS and hopefully I'll get it by next year. The Italian Job just inspired me to buy the car. I loved the original and now the remake is spectacular (the movie and the car). Until then, I'll have to get my MINI and Hawaii fix here.

I hope you don't mind, but I have some input regarding a name for your club. As a club, you want to be readily identified by your region (SoCal MINIs). If you use words such as HUI, many people will not understand it. I for one had to remember my Hawaiian. All I could remember about Hui was Henry Huihui and the bad guys with the surf shop that used to strong arm people. To me HUI also has a negative connotation as I remember my parents always getting into huis for investments, or huis to go to Vegas. If you do plan to use a Hawaiian word, try something that is unversally recognized, after all the MINI phenomenom is international. Maybe something with the word Aloha in it.

Are you folks trying to be a local chapter of MINICCA? If so, it would probably be best to keep a regional identity. Also, if you had logo merchandise such as stickers, shirts, caps...your merchandise would fly off the shelf at a National meet. Boy, it would be great to barter with Hawaii t-shirts (you'd have alot of leverage there). After all, everyone loves Hawaii. Just look at Donna & Mike who want shirts.

P.S. I thought you folks had a club name? Wasn't it MINI Club of Hawaii? Oh well, just my $.02 from a mainlander's perspective. I figure I'll be getting some change.

Welcome aboard! Coopertino? That's a good one! And Sunnyvale is even more expen$ive than Cupertino.

I had the same thoughts about a name as it should reflect the are where we are from. I thought about 808 MINIs, but you are correct as people may not know that 808 is the area code for the entire state of Hawaii. I guess something with Hawaii in the name would be good.

Welcome BayAreaMINI (or shall I say BAM!). First post and it's in the Hawaii Forum. You and Beastmaster made some good points. I do feel that more discussion needs to be done on deciding a name.

Aloha BAM,

Ah, Sunnyvale, my ole stompin' grounds. That's where I used to work but couldn't afford to live there so did the commute from Monterey.

Couldn't find affordable, decent housing in Sunnyvale so moved to Hawaii instead...go figure

Interesting points you brought up from "outside the box", so to speak.
The fact that this thread is very active suggests that further brainstorming is needed on a name. Yes, a vote was made, but it seems the general consensus requires more research (Hawaiian language) and feedback (regional identity)

I voted on all the names so I don't have a favorite, I just want this club off the ground. Heck, for all I care it could be called HI 5-0 MINI SORRY! Got off track, there.

Mahalo everyone for all the inputs. Keep um coming. I'm sure we'll find a derivative of a regional-Hawaiian-MINI name
