MINI HUI
SouthSeaSadie (Aunty Sylvia),
Thank you for the E-mail and kind words - I too am looking forward to meeting you folks soon.
On your older post about logos (entitled "Club names and logos"
you had two split Mini/MINI silhouettes with wording in the middle - I thought this was unique and clean. I didn't see it on the new choices you posted but thought it might be something that might also be considered in your mix-n-match.
Here's something to consider.....for today's youth (especially in hip-hop speak) 5-0 actually has a NEGATIVE association to it. To them 5-0 = POLICE. I am not saying being associated with the police is bad, but in some way if 5-0 is in the name it may be associated the wrong way. I may be thinking too much into it but just thought I'd throw it on the table.

>>I like Hawaii Mini Hui too; it's catchy and Kohu'ulaMINI is right, the acronym HMH is great. I'll work something up design-wise.
>>
If memory serves me correctly, there's a coffee delivery club from Maui named the Hana Hou Hui (the repeat club) - you say when you want your coffee shipped and it repeats, like every month. They also have Makana Hui (Gift Club). I see no reason why you can't use the HUI as the last word in your club's name. It is obviously not offensive or the Maui Coffee Co - 800 909-KONA - wouldn't be using it.
BTW, I love coffee and the Maui Blend Chocolate Macadamia Nut sounds great to me !!! Sounds like a trip to the store for some KONA coffee! $$ cha-ching !

DaKine, we could always be MINI 5-0. All we need is a JB/W or CB/W MINI and put on some magnetic decals. This could be the lead car in a parade. Then the driver could wear a London Bobby's uniform.

MINI Kupa o Hawaii
I'm glad to hear kupa means something positive. It would seem a shame to have such a cool Hawaiian word play option and not use it.
I like the MINI logo with the little Hawaiian flag flying off the back.
So, there's my vote for name and logo.

Here we go again folks
Several points have come to my attention, and also to re-emphasize some key points from BayAreaMINI:
-Region specific - "Hawaii"....short and sweet. As found on a new thread about names of other MINI clubs across North America; the region, county, or state was included (ie SoCalMM, DCMetro)
-Marketability- a catchy name that others outside of Hawaii would recognize and "desire". A name/logo that mainlanders would pay to have like souveniers. Imagine the revenue generated for the club by selling/bartyring our club name/logo on T-shirts, hats, window decals, etc.

Good points Kohu'ulaMINI. In fact, kudos to everyone who has provided their feedback into this. The more ideas that are thrown in for discussion the closer we will be in choosing the perfect name/logo.
Here's what just came to mind: What about something like -
(on top)
MINI Islands USA, or
Islands of MINIs USA
(middle)
birds-eye view of a MINI with the flag of the State of Hawaii on the roof
(below)
an island chapter name - Oahu, Hawaii (or Big Island), Maui, Kauai

Again, thanks for all the input.
I must argue the other side from Kohu'ulaMINI.
1. Hawaiian words or phrases or made up words don't deter tourists from buying merchandise--ask Rick Ralston of Crazy Shirts or Local Motion or any of the surf shops.
2. My original point--very few of the Mini clubs are going with conventional names and I think that reflects the character of the car and its drivers. Whatever club we form will eventually be part of the Mini Car Clubs of America, so there's your official name.
3. Mini Hui was the hands down favorite at the meeting and I feel Hawaii Mini Hui was a good change to make it even more catchy and region-specific.
4. I run a website of Hapa Haole song lyrics and, since the early 20th century, real or nonsense Hawaiian words in a song only added to its charm to an audience that didn't have a clue what the words meant. Just think of the words to My Little Grass Shack or Yaaka Hula Hickey Doola or Red Opu or Princess Poo-poo-ly. The odd word in the Hawaiian language seems to impart the romance of the islands and a fun mystery.
5. New/old Minis. I believe all clubs are thrilled to have both classic and new Minis. None of them show both cars on their logos. It just complicates the graphics. Simple is best. Visible and legible from 50 yards on a foggy night is the ideal.
Anybody who wants to fight it out can do so on Saturday, but in the meantime, Hawaii Mini Hui is what I'll tentatively put in the bylaws. We must settle on something.

Thanks Sadie,
So far the favorable name is Hawaii MINI Hui, I like it too. I was just bringing up points that were brought up to my attention, which, may not neccessarily be mine....except for the other name.
I just want to make sure that the new name discussed on MCO is agreed by majority of those that voted "Mini Hui". I guess we can do a "final vote" to see if Hawaii Mini Hui is accepted (being online, Saturday, or the next meeting)
Thanks everyone for all the fresh ideas...I like 'em all.
A previous quote from Sadie, chime in if you agree.......
>>
>>I still like the sound of Hawaii Mini Hui, It's crisp, clean and clever, and region specific. I also like the initials HMH.
I, personnally, am diggin' the H M H

I'm new to this posting...but would like to add in my comment regarding the name of the club I hope to join.
First, I am of Native Hawaiian decent. I graduated from a school for Native Hawaiians, and it was there that I completed four years of Hawaiian language, so I take this stuff seriously.
I think that all of your efforts to find a name is awesome....whatever you folks choose will be cool! I will join no matter what because the overall reason we are all here is because of our mutual love for our MINIs, not a catchy name. None the less, I'm sure we all agree that a catchy name would be great!
Being a Native Hawaiian, I feel uncomfortable putting Hawaiian names/words together with non Hawaiian names/words. The University of Hawaii felt the same way several years ago. This was the reason why they changed the name of the girls volleyball team from "The Wahines" to "Na Wahine".
I feel that if you are going to make a name using Hawaiian words, we at least owe it to ourselves, native Hawaiians, and the state that we live in, to use the words correctly no matter how cute and catchy the phrase sounds incorrectly.
Secondly, I think the name should be classic...a name that doesn't become outdated next year. I don't have any specific ideas, but something short and simple would be great.
Anyway, I hope I didn't offend anyone, because I really do think you all have great ideas. I'll keep an eye on this posting and will watch as it developes.
Thanks!

I would agree with Keikilee about the use of only Hawaiian words for our group name.
So lets think about what might work and think along the lines just described.
All of those points sound dead on to me. Now I don't want to say that we cannot also consider
other good names. Perhaps that would also be a good thing to think about as well.
Such as lets come up with a good name using some catchy words and also a good more traditional Hawaiian name.
Then we can have a vote off. Also we will need to think about the design/logo and how that might work with
the name.
Keikilee, I appreciate your points and background. Excellent. Please let us know if you see us go astray.
We're an enthusiatic bunch with good intentions.

Thanks minihune. You folks weren't going astray at all...this is all part of the brain storming process.
I'm not sure about literal translations of MINI KUPA because I haven't heard of the word "MINI" in the Hawaiian language, but it does work as MINI Citizen or one who is well acquainted with MINIs (as SouthSeaSadie previously stated)....that's actually very cute! Traditionally, it should be KUPA MINI, but its the right idea and I would say that it's generally accepted in Hawaiian.
My vote would be for either....Hawaii MINI Motoring Club or MINI KUPA. Or both.
Hopefully you folks haven't already voted at what seemed to be a meeting this past saturday. If so, let me know what yu folks decided!
Thanks!

Welcome aboard and thanks for the insightful inputs
As you can tell from this thread, we still haven't ironed out the club name yet.
You have made excellent points regarding the literal translation of Hawaiian words/phrases.
Like I posted earlier, I don't want to disrespect the Hawaiian native language. We're happy to have you be our "official" translator
