JCW Tuning Kit, Up Grade, and Air Filter Part Numbers and Labor Info

Aloha folks!-

Made my weekly visit to MoH yesterday and thought I'd share some of the JCW info I was able to source . My appologies if this is a repeat from previous threads! I tried multiple searches and could not locate this intel. Info was sourced directly from MINI service document.

JCW Tuning Kit 210 bhp MCS CABRIO (ATTN Keiki!)
#11 12 0 395 128 MSRP $4,650.00 Plus $1,000.00 refundable core charge

JCW Tuning Kit 210 bhp MCS built AFTER 1/04
#11 12 0 395 129 MSRP $4,650.00 Plus $1,000.00 refundable core charge

JCW Tuning Kit 210 bhp MCS built BEFORE 1/04
#11 12 0 395 130 MSRP $4,650.00 Plus $1,000.00 refundable core charge

JCW Upgrade Kit from 200 bhp*
#11 12 0 395 131 MSRP $525.00

JCW Air Filter Kit
#13 72 0 391 513 MSRP $450.00

*The upgrade kit can only be installed on cars which already have JCW Kit part #11 12 0 302 673 or 11 12 0 303 287 installed. The combination of the older kits and upgrade kit cannot be installed on the CABRIO, as the CABRIO has a modified exaust system.

Suggested installation time:

JCW Tuning Kit: 10.0 hrs
Upgrade Kit: 1.5 hrs
Air Filter Only: 0.75 hrs

I am considering the upgrade kit for my '04 MCS Works. I was quoted the above price of $525.00 and labor quoted at $212.00. I believe that MoH labor rate is $85.00/Hr. Please correct me if I am wrong. That would put MoH install at about 2.5 hours. As noted above labor rate of 1.5 hours is suggested only. Cost and labor looks fair to me and I trust their work. This will probably be Merry Christmas to ME!

News Flash ! Per MoH Service Advisor, ONE of you lucky Hawai'i MCS Works owners has already installed the upgrade and is enjoying the +10 bhp factory spec'd boost ! Would love a review if you read this thread!

Aloha!

2005 JCW upgrade kit

Aloha gang!

I can give you a hint on who the lucky owner is of the 2005 JCW upgarde kit.

This owner owns a 2004 British Racing Green MCS with white roof and white wheels .....and, no.....it's not kbseto

I don't think he is on NAM, but kbseto has met him.
It took very little encouraging to convince him that he needed the 10 hp upgrade

BTW, the upgraded BRG/W MCS has no JCW badges
It's a "sleeper" so next time you pull up next to a BRG/W MCS, watch out!

COOL, a MINI sleeper! I'll keep an eye out !

Looks like I may hold off on the Works upgrade in exchange for the car alarm. There have been three break-ins on my street in the last few days including the tool box on my Dad's beater Toyota P/U! All the ding dongs got from there was a pair of old leather gloves and a six-pack cooler with a hole in it!

Aloha!

related story to the sleeper...my sister called me on my cellee last night and was wondering where i was going as she was right behind me. knowing where my sister works, what time it was (after work), and where i was at the time (heading past waikele into town), i knew she couldn't possibly be behind me.

when i told her she wasn't behind me, she replied she swore that that was me as the mini in front of her was brg/w with roof racks and even the sirius doggie ontop the antenna. in fact, the doggie is what she always used to determine it was me in the past.

so...i'm wondering if the sleeper is the same fellow. it seems even more so he and i may be mistaken for each other. if this is the same guy, he may even be using my oem rims. i just hope we won't see the other in his mini while walking along as pedestrians; otherwise, we'll probably think somebody just ripped off our mini.

maybe i'll just hafta do something else new to my mini...

I have one word for you brother, Doppelgänger !

Main Entry: dop·pel·gäng·er
Variant(s): or dop·pel·gang·er /'dä-p&l-"ga[ng]-&r, -"ge[ng]-, "dä-p&l-'/
Function: noun
Etymology: German Doppelgänger, from doppel- double + -gänger goer
1 : a ghostly counterpart of a living person
2 a : DOUBLE 2a b : ALTER EGO b c : a person who has the same name as another

Looks like a good story for . . . The Twilight Zone!

Catching up with the other BRG/W's

Aloha All,

I guess Honu will have to catch up and get the 10 additional HP when I get back next year. We already went Dinan for the air intake and throttle body - got tired of waiting for JCW and knew where the choke point was.

Aloha Honu and HawaiEE-

I had thought about getting the Dinan also. Looked pretty impressive on-line.

I'll probably schedule for the kit up-grade in early January. I might pick it up from the dealer and install the airbox my self to save labor then get the ECU flash done at MoH.

I also wanted to drop in a Helix 13 upper strut brace but Eric said no go with the JCW airbox. Oh well!

Still haven't heard any comments from any Hawai'i or HMMC JCW Kit upgraders. Most other NAM chat supports the addition fairly well.

Aloha and MINI Kaikimaka!

whoops, forgot to post over here my comments about the upgrade kit.
first, i did the recall and the upgrade in the same visit, so there may be some overlap of benefits.
but what a difference it makes! i was most impressed by the smoothness, especially in the lower gears. no yo-yo or stumble, even when slowing down in the low gears, as i tested this repeatedly in daily traffic. also noted improved thottle response from a dead stop. and of course there was more power thru all gears.
everything just seems to operate so much more efficiently and at times almost effortlessly. because of this, i tend to shift a bit higher at ~4500 rpms on the freeway. plus the supercharger whine comes out more at that engine speed with the opening of the flap. and to top it off, shifting at 4500+ rpms in the middle gears is simply exhilirating, especially when merging onto the freeway.
and last thing noted is no extra fuel consumption with the extra power. i still get ~320-330 miles to the tank.
now i'm just waiting for the jcw suspension kit to be modified for pre-'05 minis. definitely on my to-do list.

Aloha, all!

I recently talked with the "sleeper" BRG/W JCW MCS and ditto to kbseto's assessment of the 10hp upgrade.
Definitely smooth acceleration from a dead stop and no sacrifice in petrol consumption
The increase in kompressor whine @4500 rpms is said to be intoxicating

With kbseto's OEM wheels, the "sleeper" MINI looks like the bizzarro twin

Dinan CAI w/ JCW

JCW04,

Mele Kalikimaka! The Dinan ECU is not recommended with the JCW. Yes, the website says that if you get the Dinan CAI and throttle body then you need the Dinan ECU, but when you ask them about putting it on a JCW they tell you not to change the chip.

The Dinan strut brace works with their CAI and I'd love to show it to you put MoH couldn't install it. Seems City & County's roads (plus maybe my driving?) caused my shock towers to mushroom beyond the point that the brace could be bolted down. My first thought was that Mini's design for the shock tower did not account for the levels of force that Hawaii roads subject them to. My second thought was, "when on Earth am I going to find the time to get the shock towers beat back down and repainted so I can come back to MoH and get the brace?" I suspect that the brace would help distribute pot hole impact forces to the other tower and thus reduce the probability of mushrooming, but it's just a theory.

Aloha

HawaiEE-

Aloha bro! Good info from you kbseto and Koho'ula MINI. Much appreciated folks!

Spent the day delivering gifts to Kapolei, Kipapa, and down into Kaneohe town. The highways are probably the WORST I've experienced in years.

Maybe I'm just more sensitive now that I'm driving a MINI but boy, some of those pot holes and gaps in freeway expansion points are just down right lethal.

I can fully appreciate the amount of damage your poor strut towers experienced.

The stretch from Pearl City west bound through Kaonohi over pass has turned into the chicane from Hades. it's a good test of driver reaction skills but it's one test you DON'T want to flunk!

Hope you all enjoyed X-Mas. Now it's time to start paying the bills!

Aloha!

Ditto

Aloha & Happy Holidays!!

Got the 10hp JCW upgrade installed yester day and I have to ditto Kbsteo's comments. The mini is so Smoooooth now in all gears throughout the RPM range. I do miss the supergharger wine the Alta gave , I guess I will just have shift a little later.

Any one interested in a Alta intake? like new only 400 miles on it.

Happy New Year to All

Hey JCW04,

Thanks for all the info! I'm going to put a JCW kit into my '03 MCS and I'm a little confused on all the options. I thought the tuning kit 210 bhp already included the airbox kit (with new injectors), but my dealer says it doesn't. What's the horse with BOTH installed? What's the difference between the 'JCW Upgrade Kit from 200 bhp*' and the airbox kit (the one with the injectors, not just the filter)?

Thanks in advance,

SCoop

SCoop-

Aloha! My '04 came with the then current JCW kit which is the factory rated 200 bhp. In January of '05 I did the JCW upgrade which included the new airbox, injectors, and ECU flash.

I'm not sure what your dealer is up to. Sounds like he is setting it up as an ala carte so to speak. As far as I know if they are selling the 210 kit it should include everything.

Let me know how you do!

Anyone else have any comments or thoughts?

Aloha!

Thanks! That's kinda what I thought... I'll do some more research on it before confirming with my dealer what's going on.

SCoop-

If you are able to, I'd check with several dealers. That's some prety big coin you are about to drop!

By the way, one draw back of the '05 upgrade is a rather pronounced engine idle drop when you come to a stop. A little blip on the gas pedal cures it.

I have seen several postings on it and it appears to be a flash issue the MINI has not developed a patch for.

Aloha!

Here's the part number reference for the 210 hp kit ...

I believe the list price on the kit is now $4775.

Thanks Miniac! I found that link earlier today. I guess I'll just have to print it out and bring it with me when I ask the dealer again.
Again thanks to JCW04. I'll do that!

Well I called around to several dealers, and I even called the parts dept. of my dealer, and all confirmed that the current kit ($4775) does indeed include the new airbox and injectors. I then left a voice mail for my service rep stating the above. He called back to say that I was right; he hadn't realized that there was a 'new' version of the kit for '03's.
