Track days and shifting

Question for those who track your GP3: Do you leave it in Sport mode or use the paddles in manual mode? And if manual mode, how? I've been trying manual mode, but half the time I don't even know what gear I'm in because the gear indicator is so damn small, lol! And the steering wheel covers the display Any tips here? Also, I'm only talking about on track. Daily driving I have it figured out.

I answered on the facebook group, and I don't have the full answer, but regardless of whether you keep automatic or switch to manual, definitely move it over to sport mode, I know for a fact that not only does this stop auto start/stop, but it changes the lock-up characteristics of the torque converter. Anecdotally, I have never had the car shift for me, except for when coming to a stop/when not doing so would cause the engine to stall, interestingly, it tends to not shift but rather just release the torque converter more often than not.

There's a reason the shifter says M/S, and not just S when put in sport mode, I believe many people who complain about the transmission just start pressing on the paddles and think they have found manual mode.

Edit: If you can't see the entire cluster while driving, I would suggest changing the steering wheel tilt first, since the screen is on the the column, even small changes in the steering wheel position can make huge changes on what you can see.

It's not that I can't see the cluster. The gear indicator is tiny as hell. And as soon as you turn the wheel, it's blocked.

The instruments are compared to the competition not up to date. Everybody think GP3 is track focused, but that ends with the gear indicator. As far as I understand it, the middle section of the cluster is free to design. However a app like this is missing:

Dont think it was in the budget.

Although, the GP3's digital display is nice. You are right that it needs larger a Speed Indicator and Gear Indicator.

My 2019 JCW International Orange Edition came standard with the "Heads Up" display. At first I thought it was a gimmick. But, it Sport Mode, when I am on the track, the heads up display is awesome. It has a big RPM counter with gear selected in the middle. And the RPM counter flashes red when it is time to shift and there is a big speed indicator. All of these are in front of you on the windshield and you don't have to constantly look down at the traditional dash.

I love the heads up display. It is too bad it is not available anymore with the digital dash.

why worried about gear, RPM is far more important keep it over 3500 at all times. if you do a lot of trackdays invest in something like a racecapture MK3 and the shift light, I have mine set to warn me if I'm under 4000 rpm and then warn me again if I'm nearing the rev limit

the shift light is canbus and can be located in your vision, and set to blink too so you'll always know if you need to down or upshfit

@MrBlah Can you talk more about your MK3 setup? Actually, after stalking some of your posts and watching the videos, do you have details on your data logging setup, too? I'm currently just using what I can get via defaults from OBDII into RaceChrono, but I want *more*, lol! If you have pics of the setup that would be even more awesome!

there's a few data loggers that work with modern canbus cars, i went with the MK2 pro because I can add analog sensors, and GPIO inputs, along with outstanding grassroots support and the live data streaming to podium.live

None of the other offerings have the podium streaming, my wife can see my data while I'm on the track and send messages to my dashboard, and the session is logged to the website so I can do analysis immediately. Racecapture is supported by solostorm I found it with a gopro is the easiest way to get video without much effort, AIM has the best solution but they want 1000 $ just for the camera. I believe the camera can be used with the racecapture datalogger too but I am ok with gopro.

The MK3 looks interesting, but unfortunately I can't find any information on getting the data I want from the GP3 (or the M135i xDrive, F40). I'd really like to tap into the CAN bus and get rpm/gear info. And try to find a way to get brake pressure info, tbh. Granted, RPM is available via OBDII, but gear and brakes are not. The search continues, heh.
