GP in Roundel
GP in Roundel
This month's Roundel magazine (BMWCCA) has a review of the GP on the track. Interesting DSC observations and timely given all the threads about DSC in the MINI Talk section of this forum. Basically it says that with it off it is a pretty good track car. With it on it feels pretty terrible on the track.
I just got my MSC JCW with DSC so I haven't driven it on the track yet. I had occasion to drive an M5 down in Spartanburg as a guest at new owners M School in 2002 and I found the DSC to be very intrusive and made throttle steering the car impossible. Maybe it has gotten better in the last few years and as this was an abbreviated class for new owners I didn't get much seat time to really master it. They wouldn't let you turn it off in the M-school they ran and everything I knew how to do from many sessions with my '73 BMW 2002 track went out the window. I spent the whole time trying to modulate the throttle to just stay out of DSC but still go fast.
So far on the street the DSC is fine. It kicks in off the line but as it isn't the track it is difficult to push hard enough in the corners to really have it kick in excessively. (Mind you I'm a believer in leaving the super aggressive driving on the track).
Anyway it is an interesting review and something for the GP owners.

They are right on about the DSC. I had mine on twice this fall at the Glen with GVC CCA and it is a completely different car as stated in the Roundel issue. With it off, I was amased how the car handled in it's stock form. Very close to my 03 which had numerous suspension upgrades. Can't wait till spring when camber plates, arms, and bars go on the GP that's sitting in the garage for the winter. I believe MOTORN had the same feelings about his car at MID-OHIO this fall also.
Roundel is the monthly magazine for the BMW Car Club of America ("BMWCCA")
I'm a long time owner of a 2002 and member of the CCA.

They would like more MINI owners as members if you're interested. They host well run, cost effective, high speed driver's education events (track days in non-legal speak).
