Fake GP for sale?

I was helping a guy at work look at cars and came across this listing:
http://autobase.com/cgi/info.exe?bc=4601328

Poor GP is all confused looking and mismatched.

Definitely not a GP. I thought the guy who had this car bought a wrecked GP or had a GP that was wrecked and put all the parts on his other S. It was posted here a while back. The vin number also shows its not a GP. Wrong hatch, no roof number, wrong speedo...etc.

I see that this car is for sale at BMW of Santa Maria. I work in Santa Maria and have never seen this car around town so I am not sure where it came from. However, this BMW dealership does tend to get a lot of Minis for sale. I think they buy them from around the state to sell in Santa Maria because the closest real Mini dealership is 120 miles away.

This is definitely just a MCS with many GP parts added. If your friend is interested in the car, I would be glad to take a look at it at the dealership (only about 10 minutes from my home).

What a joke! Some sellers really think people are suckers! BMW of Santa Maria should be popped for false advertising. Isn't this kind of sale, standard MCS VIN etc. illegal in Cali?

This is being sold at a BMW dealership and they are purporing this to be GP ?

If it was, the owner took a GP and turned it into a S model.....NAV, climate Control, MFSW, and even repainted the exterior and bolted standard rear facia trim.....wonder where they got the number from they are advertising ?????? GP 1039 ?

I doubt very much that it is even a JCW......

Who ever said used car dealers were dishonest must have met these guys. I am very surprised a BMW dealer would advertise this MCS as a GP. I would hope that the situation is the person that writes the ads doesn't know better and mangement is in the dark on the ad. GP 1039 was a Right hand drive car in the UK and was totaled and scraped.

Just to defend BMW of Santa Maria a little bit, they do not know much about Minis. They do not sell Minis new, service them, or even sell parts for Minis. They are a BMW and VW dealership. I suspect they bought this vehicle at an auction (or something similar) and are only going by what they were told about the car which probably was not much. I think I will stop by the dealership and talk to them about the car so they are aware of thier misleading advertising.

I found this GP list for reference, though the site is in German: http://forum.mini2ig.de/showthread.php?p=1112469. I'm guessing this is one of your resources.

Yeah, that is sad. I'm a big fan of the GPs, and that's NOT one of them.

I went over to the dealership to check out this "GP" Mini and talk to the Sales Manager. It is a basic MCS (non-JCW) with many parts added. It has a JCW Intake and I/C cover but did not appear to have any other of the JCW engine option parts, such as cat-back exhaust. It did have many JCW carbon fiber cosmetic parts. It also had GP badges in more than just the stock locations. No JCW brakes. It has Cross Coil-Overs with front camber plates and M7 top strut brace. I did not look at the rear suspension to see if it had adj control arms or adj sway bar.

The sales manager seemed to have no idea that it was not JCW or GP car. They were just going by the badging. He said he would update the internet info on the car. I also suggested that he adjust the pricing on the car.

Stock 2006 MCS' are going around $16K, give or take based on condition/mileage. Even with those mods, they might be lucky to get $18K for it.

And the data's already been updated.

Let's keep on this boys...we don't want an potential "incident" like this besmirching our GP owner status = I'm ready to contact the "stealer" with genuine GP outrage if they don't come clean and fix their ad.

True, but they still want 23G's.

I think the dealership did what they could to correct the problem as quick as possible. After I stopped at the dealership and talked to the sales manager the website info was updated within minutes.
I think it is the dealership that got ripped off by someone promoting the car as something it was not. The dealership was only going by what they thought the car was by all the markings (JCW and GP). I think the dealership is going to lose alot of money on this car.

I'd think that any main dealer's standard procedure would be to check the VIN.

Nice work to the OP, BOOST and our very own QUIK...the link now has purged any refs to the car being anything GP. Now it's up to the buyer to figure out that the price is steep for a mod MCS. Hopefully they will check in here on NAM for research, but we can't police every sale in this regard...just false claims. At the end of the day it IS US VS. THEM in almost everything you buy these days! A customer/consumer MUST have both eyes open at all times!

I did not see the original listing, but it now reads "customized like a GP, has all the badging". The only thing on the car that resembles a GP are the red mirrors.

No, I don't have a GP.
