GP Roadtrip! Houston to Santa Cruz!
GP Roadtrip! Houston to Santa Cruz!
So I board a plane at 6am Thursday morning to pick up #907 in Houston. I'm supposed to arrive at the Houston airport at 1:30ish, and meet Mini Papa and then it's off to a 4 day road trip back to Santa Cruz. I've never spent much time in the southwest so I'm looking for an interesting route that will take me through places worth seeing in western Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. I'm planning to hit Vegas Saturday night and do the boring route back to Santa Cruz up I-5 since all the sierra passes are snowed in.
Anyone know a fun route from Houston to Vegas?
Anything worth going out of the way to see?

If you are going to take I-10 the speed limit is 80 once you get west of San Antonio a about 50 miles.....there are several different ways to go but depends on how much time you have. Carry an atlas for sure and I know you will have a great trip. Half of it will be getting through Texas.
What a wonderful way to introduce yourself to your new GP
You could do some of MTTS in reverse!
I'd particularly recommend Sandia Crest (near Amarillo, TX):

And of course, route 66!

Day one pics! (more to come, flicker and hotel wifi don't mix...)
Mini Papa letting go of his baby...

I'm in Texas, gotta stop for some BBQ...

I own the car less than 6 hours and already get popped for speeding. Thankfully he let me off with a warning...

Fueling up at some hellhole truckstop...

Sweetest mini west of the Pacos...

More later.. Sleep now.

Only 65+ you must have been falling asleep and weaving as most traffic in Texas seems to run at least 80, lol. Or were you in a 35 MPH zone. Have a great road trip. Gman

We've been all over Texas during the past week, first San Antonio to Houston and back. Then San Antonio to Dallas and back. All boring interstate, fast food joints and big box stores littering the landscape. We were also in a big ole SUV. Your trip definitely sounds cooler. Enjoy and drive safe!
