2019 MINI Cooper S 2 Door - Buy Extended Warranty?
2019 MINI Cooper S 2 Door - Buy Extended Warranty?
Hi,
Overall, very pleased with my 2019 Cooper S 2 Door Hardtop, that I custom ordered back in mid-2019. So, have had car for almost 5 years.
Other than regular maintenance, only the battery had to be replaced last fall.
Only have about 21,600 miles, mostly on freeway going back and forth to work.
MINI has been offering me multiple times the past year, an extended warranty, "Veritas Guard Agreement". Up to now, thought it was too expensive. However, the latest offer, supposedly my last chance, seems like a better offer than before.
They're offering the "Premier Plan" would cover all repairs except regular maintenance (oil changes, brake pads, etc) with a $100 deductible per incident.
Coverage for 7 years or 50K miles, for $6,056 total. Can pay it off either in full or zero interest installments ($231.50 for 2 years or $185.20 for 2.5 years).t
That works out to about $865/year to have this protection.
Also, plan is cancellable (and get pro-rated refund) or transferable to new owner should I sell the car.
In 1 - 2 years, I plan to retire, so, even less driving than I do now.
Generally, I've kept cars for 10 - 12 years in the past. So, unless something happens to change my mind, I would likely keep this car for another 5 - 7 years.
So, question is whether it makes sense to sign up for this offer or 'self-insure', ie, I just take my chances and pay the bills as they come up.
Does anyone have experience with this program? And if so, what's your opinion about it?
And in general, does this seem like a reasonable deal or do you recommend self-insuring and hope for the best?
Thank you for any and all input!
Mark

Some people talked about it here, I got one with a used MINI once and it was for 6 months. Its covered all the stuff that was wrong after I bought it. After that i did all my own work.

Nothing wrong with this but you have to be aware of this and stay within the lines when it comes to servicing, use of factory recommended fluids and factory parts, and avoid any use (Turo, pizza delivery) that could invalidate the warranty.
Also, about that 7 year warranty you want to be sure it doesn't start from when the car was new. My limited experience is if one buys an extended warranty it starts from when the car was new. Thus the extended warranty coverage overlaps the new car warranty and if for some reason the warranty claim was denied by the factory it would also be denied by the extended warranty.
Thanks for all your helpful input, RockC!
Great idea......
As for warranty date issue, I think guy said it starts from time I purchase the plan. Would be wise to double check this, if I were to purchase.
FWIW, I looked at Consumer Reports latest car brand and car model info and BMW is now ranked #1 brand, with MINI rated 2 or 3 depending upon where you look at their info.
And the 2019 MINI is rated very highly for reliability, so that's reassuring.
Given this info as compared to cost of the warranty, I'm leaning towards self-insuring and taking my chances.....hopefully, that will turn out to be a good decision.
