Turbo heat shield easy upgrade

Hi
Sometime ago, I has if anyone had painted their ugly turbo heat shield and got a few responses. But no one shared their results. So I decided to give it a try and see if I could improve both the look and functionally of the stock unit. First I decided to paint it with VHT high heat paint in flat black which provided the much needed cosmetic improvement. But the real problem was that stock shield doesn't have any heat barrier properties. It simply adsorbed the heat and transferred it to the upper engine area. So I decided to apply some heat barrier material that I purchased from Thermo Tec. The people at Thermo Tec were a great help explaining how their Heat Barrier could help to control the heat from the turbo. They even allowed me to pick it up at their distribution center in Ohio. As a bonus, having left over heat barrier material I also applied it to the hood, over the area of the turbo heat source. Now, only time will tell how effective my efforts were.

Amount spent: $25. Time spent: ALOT. Reinstalling the heat shield's bottom bolts are a MAJOR pain.

Here are some picture of the results.

Turbo heat shield painted with VHT high heat flat black paint.

Heat shield installed

A new look. A much needed improvement.

Used the remaining 'Heat Barrier' product to better protect the hood and air scoop area from heat damage

Thanks for the replies. I'm a new Mini owner of a 2014 chili red convertible S. Though this is not my first Mini, I had a 2002 but had to get rid of it when it locked my wife in the car. Yes, believe it or not if you leave someone in the car and lock it with the keys, they can't get out. Go ahead and try it. Before I got my new one I had to test and see of that the problem was fixed. Wife approved...

Hoping to visit ECS soon because they are just down the road from me. Probably after we get warmer weather so I can enjoy the drive with the top down. Do you have a showroom that displays what you offer? Have you considered carrying ThemoTec products? They are near you in a suburb of Mansfield, OH. And maybe you'll be able to tell me the way a professional tightens the bottom bolts of the heat shield? I was on my back for a LONG time.

5310Mini - waiting for warmer weather.

Looks great. Did you use the VHT Flame Proof product? If so, how did you cure it?

I use VHT High Heat. Good for indirect heat up to 2000 degrees. Never saw anything about curing. Hopefully, it won't get that hot because of the heat barrier material covering the inside. The heat barring material should really reduce the amount of heat had been radiating upward. And that was the goal. Thanks for all the comments.
