unstable in the rain is it the car or the tires.

lately in the rain driving on the highway any speed past 60 MPH the car gets unstable in the wet road. i can feel the back end loosing grip at the highway speeds like there is no tread left on the tiers but the only have 1000 miles on them, there still new. I drive a 2013 mini cooper base model with the stock 15 inch wheels 175 65 15 cooper CS3 touring all season I have had the tires before on others cars with no issue. i was wandering if this is a thing for second gen minis. also my last car was a 2002 mini base model and that car had no issue in the rain!

Hydroplaning? On I-70 in heavy rain I was doing about 40 to 45 when a black Mustang flew past doing at least 70 and disappeared in a wall of water. Next thing I saw it was spinning across the median and nearly up onto the opposite lane of traffic. It came to rest 90° facing my lane and two young fellas staring up at us with eyeballs the size of tennis *****. I smiled and waved as we went by.
The rear end doesn't have as much weight on it as the front, planing is very possible and depends on how deep the water is in the low ruts on the pavement.

What pressure are you running in them? Maybe run them on the lower end of the range for a better footprint.

Have you had your alignment checked? If the alignment is OK, then it's the tires.

+1 pressures and alignment, pressures first (because it's cheap) some tire shops forget to set them properly after mounting them and they can be over-inflated which would explain the feeling.

Expanding on my previous response - it isn't anything inherent in the car. I have an R56 like yours and with my tires (Michelin Pilot Sport 4) I have no problem in the rain. Check inflation pressure and alignment, if those are OK then it's the tires. Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 is an excellent all weather tire.

I ditched my run flats for this reason. Car felt like it would slide about. Do you have run flats?
