In first 15 min of driving it doesn't slip at all. After that 3-4-5-6 slip when floored, but not every time. After my test drive tonight while experiencing slippage, I put in 5th (and tried in 6th as well), put foot on brakes, let go of clutch. Didn't die in either gear, which I thought was the official clutch test.
Signs of a clutch beginning to go are slippage under heavy throttle/load in 5th or 6th gear. If you're also experiencing slippage in 3rd and 4th, then my guess is that it is pretty far gone and could fail any time. Get that clutch looked at / replaced pronto.
Yes, Have it looked at, they can also double check your rear crank seal, if leaking this my be a contributing factor to some slipping.
Motor on!
Thanks! Cooper is getting a new Valeo SM conversion and a bunch of front end parts, along with a new rear main seal. Found a local shop who's letting me bring in my own parts and is only charging labor ($1000).. and if by chance he does it under shop book time, he'll throw me a bone!
On the front end I have done mine, here are the key parts you will need. I know you have them already, just make sure you have them all. After about 150K I did all of mine.
My mechanic is in the middle of a clutch install and he said he broke some grommet that connects the clutch linkage to the tranny. Does that sound familiar to anyone? He's going to send me a pic soon, that might help.
Any idea what he's talking about? Normally the mechanic would just order parts himself, but he's not sure where to start without ordering the entire cable assembly. He's also cutting me a break and installing my own parts since he's never worked on a MINI before and doesn't want to deal with finding specialty parts. I'm just glad I'm not paying 3x OEM prices for mediocre parts.
He's charging $1000 labor to learn how to replace a clutch on a mini?
Well.. Errr. Um... Yeah. That includes front end work and it's still far cheaper than anywhere else who had the same lack of experience on MINIs. I'm in Iowa, what can I say? Everyone else was going to charge me $650-900 for the Valeo clutch kit that I got for $299 (with new flywheel). Also, I got to install $450 in front end parts from Way at list price instead of whatever crappy knockoff OEM parts marked up 2-3x. The mechanic is young, but a good guy who opened a new shop downtown recently and I'm giving him a shot.
I apologize for the snarky remark. If he's a good mechanic, am sure he'll figure it out. A clutch is a clutch after all..
Believe me, I was hesitant to drop it off with him. My other options were my normal guy who's honest, but didn't want to touch this with a 10 foot pole and wanted to charge me $2.2k. 2 other shops (who's owners I know personally) never returned my estimate, so I'm guessing they don't want to deal with the hassle. My best alternate was a guy who specializes in Audis, but also sells them used on a lot and has tons of negative feedback for cussing out customers. Used car salesman just screams honesty.
He's never worked on a MINI before, but thats usually the case in the midwest unless you're in Chicago. Fingers crossed.
I don't think you can replace just the bushing, I'm pretty sure you have to replace the whole cable... they run about $75.00 to $100.00 depending on the cable. But these are only for your Shifter, would not have anything to do with a slipping clutch.

GrayRaven mentioned the following. Would a short shifter kit come with these bushings or are these different bushings? The ones I need are attached to the cable. A set shipped runs $175..

I would get a B&M Short shift kit for 35-50 bucks which is about what I have seen them go for. The kit comes with new harder bushings which should last longer and gives a more precise feel to each gear.
You should be able to have it installed for about 200 dollars unless they come across a frozen bolt or break one off, then add another 20 mins labor or so.
With the B&M kit, your old shift **** presses right on just like the original.
