two left front rotors, and suspension

Just bought 2007 mini cooper s jcw. My mechanic said need two front brake pads and rotors and, by the way you are running two left front rotors on your car.

Being new to a mini cooper, Is this normal? Should I replace them? Why two lefts?

Suspension, This cooper is lowered. We need to put it back to stock suspension wise. There is a hill to get to our house and its a pain in the butt to go out of our way to use a different way in. Trying to find stock springs. The car is a certified JCW. We would also like to sell off the lowering springs that are currently on the mini.

Please help, Anyone....

Thank you.

we took it to a another machanic. We have been dealing with this guy for the last 20 years and 6 different vehicles. The mini dealer we are close to is way, way over priced.

Do you have a JCW? The question still remains, Are two left rotors on the front of the mini normal?

The stock rotors are no different between the left or right they are the same rotor unless you have crossed drilled or slotted rotors then they usually have a left and right.

You can see here on RealOem they are the same http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...18&hg=34&fg=07

Are you sure your mechanic was not messing with you?

This lin says you can use two. same rotors on the front.

Other JCW owners are you running to same front rotors or different.

I would not go by MM as gospel IMO. As you can see in their picture they are directional. That means there is a left and right. The slots are angled to use the rotors in direction of rotation to enhance their performance, which makes the rotors side-specific with left and right side rotors.

That is what I was thinking as well. Just wanted some reassurance. How are you with the suspension?

Thank you. We just bought it monday night. It is 2007 cooper s turbo jcw, automatic transmission. This thing is fast as hell. This is my wifes car. For the last 14 years she has driven nothing but 4x4's jeeps and fj cruiser, so this is a big switch. we love it. The previous owner took this car to the mini's on the dragon, and had it lowered and redid the road course and cut 11 minutes off his time. I will admit that it is fun to drive, but the previous owner drove it like you stole it basically all the time. We won't do thta all the time but I will some of the time.

We are looking to put the springs back to stock instead of being lowered. Other than going to the dealer, I am not having any luck in finding stock springs.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

I've installed a bunch of different rotors for MINI folks since 2002

and I have never seen rotors marked for a specific side .... slotted or other wise . . .

I guess you have never put on slotted rotors then. They all come in left and rights depending on the direction of the slots and vanes.

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brake...Slotted+Rotors

How the Brembo Slotted Rotors work

Starting with select castings, Brembo Sport slotted brake rotors undergo the race-born practice of machining multiple shallow slots into the disc?s front and rear surfaces to provide paths to disperse built-up heat and gasses, and assist in refreshing the surface of the brake pads. Compared to cross-drilled rotors, machined slots have been widely adopted for racing and street use because they minimize the cracking caused by repeated, high stress, high temperature brake applications. The slots are angled to use the rotors? direction of rotation to enhance their performance, which makes the rotors side-specific with left and right side rotors.

Welcome aboard to the fun world of MINIs...some are more mod-ed than others...

Actually, the rotors could have directional vanes. There would be a left and right. These would not be stock. The stock rotors are not directional.

As for raising the car. Are you sure the springs are lowering springs and not the JCW springs? If your car is a JCW, then it could have the JCW suspension, which has red springs and it lowers the car about 1/2 inch.

If it has aftermarket springs, then you have 3 choices of stock springs. There is base spring that comes on the base & S, a sports suspension spring and the JCW spring. A dealer would be the best to help you get the right spring. The different springs come with different front sways which can be measured and the springs can be matched to the sway bar.

My powerslot cryo slotted rotors were marked left and right. The vanes aren't
directional, but the slots are. Having said that, there's probably only about 1%
difference between left on left and left on right if you have two lefts.

If he has plain rotors there would be no difference.

PM me if you need different springs. I have couple of stock sets. One set from 2012 MCS and one set from 2013 JCW.

Thanks for all your replys. I went out and looked at the springs they are black and say eibach. Looking on ebay I see that they are high performance and lower the car about 1.2 inches.

There are two pictuers of the mini we now own. I don't know if the pictures do it justice but there is maybe 1/2 to a 1/4 inch of clearence between the tire and wheel well. I was also thinking for the springs we would get a much smoother ride. We test drove minis at the dealer and the ride was great even in sport. but the stiffness in this is excessive. Yes you can take corners at 80 or more if you want and it will stick like glue but thats not us.

I checked the disc brakes yes same direction on both front discs and the rears are just standard solid discs.

Very nice.

For replacement spring - the JCW springs will raise the car about an inch and will be the stiffest of the MINI springs. Both the stock S springs and the sports suspension springs will raise the car back up to its full height. The stock S springs will be the softest and the sports suspension springs will be between the "S" and JCW springs. Hope that helps.

As for the stock JCW front rotors, the MINI parts are non-directional:

Stick with the non-cross drilled; less money unless you are going for looks.

Yes,

The brake rotors for Genuine MINI for the JCW Solid face and the JCW Slotted / Cross Drilled are non directional. They use the same rotor for the left and the right side.

Do you have a close up picture of the brakes and rotors you are currently running?

Aftermarket are a different story, they can be directional dependent on brand. Our ECS Geomets are directional on the face of the rotors.

+1 for JCW springs and JCW suspension.

You get the shocks package above:

And the JCW Springs are ordered to options on your MINI, you will have to have your VIN and the options.

The JCW springs really look good.

Thanks
