external fan keeps coming on...!!!!!!!

I have replaced my thermostat and thermostat housing due to a coolant leak. However, my external fan is staying on for an extreme amount of time after the engine is turned off. I am stationed in germany, so right now the weather is very cold. I believe it might be a censor issue for with my fan but I dont know where to start looking to fix this. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP..... any suggestions are very appreciated.

External fan?
You mean the cooling fan on the radiator?
try rebleeding the cooling system, sounds like an airbubble...
If it is a gen1 there are TWO bleed valves...many only use one...and air is trapped.
On a gen2 not sure, but you did not state the year, but i am sure, there are TONS of very competant mini/bmw shops in germany that can help you!

I doubt you raised the ire of a censor so your problem might be a sensor

agree with previous - there are some issues that are the same and some that differ depending on the year and model (GEN1 vs 2 and Justa vs S)

so pls tell us the basics of what you have - year and model and any engine mods....

Causes for this I've persn'ly experienced (not all my car tho!)

GEN1:

low coolant level (check for leaking reserve tank)
leaking thermostat housing
bad coolant temp sensor
air bubble in cooling system
and the dreaded fan controller failure

GEN2
leaking thermostat housing
bad coolant temp sensor

how long does it run? Running for a minute is not unusual even in the winter if you got the engine temp up. 3 minutes would be excessive . . .

My 05 R50 did the same 2 yrs ago and after replacing t stat and housing then had to replace the fan. I bought a off brand off eBay and regret it, so if you replace the fan I suggest getting one from Mini, its a classic case of you get what you pay for. I will soon be changing mine again to a oem one once I get the funds.
