2013 Justa MPG?
2013 Justa MPG?
Hi all, tried to search on 2013 Justa fuel economy and found a few threads on octane rating and didn't seem to fit what I was looking for. My wife's 2013 Justa doesn't seem to be getting the fuel economy we expected. She pumps 92 grade and goes to the same gas station. Over the last 6 fill ups, her average mpg has been 32/31/31/30/30/30. Given that it's winter and the winter fuel mixture may cause some fuel economy to be a little lower, I wouldn't expect it to be lower than my MCS that's averaging 34/35 mpg. My drive is mostly mixed city/hwy while her drive is mainly just hwy. I am confused as to why her hwy driving and being an automatic non-S is averaging less mpg on a full tank than my manual MCS. Anyone experiencing a difference in fuel economy between their MCS and MCa?
I guess what I'm saying is that we expected her average mpg to be the same level or better than my MCS (34mpg+). Also, we are not following the onboard computer calculation. We are taking miles driven on tank divided by # of gallons it's taking to fill the tank (just for reference).
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I can't offer much insight since I'm new to Mini having purchased my base '13 Hardtop on 12/31/12 with a manual, 15" rubber and minimal options (low curb weight). But, I'll add in my gas mileage just for a data point. I think I've filled up only 3 or 4 times and the worst mileage I've recorded was 34.5 mpg on the last tank. However, we've seen a fair amount of single digit temps here in WI and that can really tank fuel economy. The other fill ups were all in the 35 to 35.5 mpg.
I'm using BP 93 octane fuel with 10% ethanol content and have been driving somewhat conservatively to break the car in. Shift points are usually in the 2,800 to 4,000 rpm range. Throttle input has not been much more than about 50% at most (again, trying to adhere to a decent break in).
Best,
Jay

Jay - thanks for your input. Is the 35mpg average from the MINI OBC or from a manual calculation from miles driven and gallons filled? I find that the OBC is off by a fuel mpgs (the OBC is higher) so have not been following that. I think the best we've seen is about 33mpg and it just seems to get lower and lower...

Thanks mini coop. What about owners out there with an auto justa? Are there drastic mpg differences between that and a manual justa? The car is driven very lightly (it's her first ever) and she is afraid to press on the throttle hard. Therefore, I would expect that her driving style would yield closer to 36+mpg given what MINi advertises for hwy mpg rating...

I have a 2008 straight Cooper Clubman, automatic. Over 5 years it's averaged 29, measured at the pump with calculator. OBC shows more like 31.8. I drive her easy, but am in a small town with a good highway mix. On longer trips, I'm up to mid 30's.
I dislike all of you.. my Cooper S averages about 26-28 MPG.. I get stuck in traffic alot (good ol Philadelphia) and my commute is a mix of city/highway..
On all highway trips I get about 30 MPG

Automatics always get less mpg than manuals. There's a lot of friction and power loss in an automatic trans.
Try switching vehicles and see if the mileage stays the same. That will help determine if it's the driver or the car.
I getting 32 - 35 with my 2013 non-S. I drive mostly highway at 70 - 73 mph.

If you can, try swapping cars with your wife and see what kind of MPG each of you gets. Driving style counts for a lot--I have gotten just under 50 MPG for several tanks in Fenimore, and I have also gotten mid-30s. I had to work hard for the 50- tanks, except for the one where it was almost all a long freeway trip with very few stops and the cruise control set at 55 MPH.
Tires can play a significant factor. That includes inflation pressures--double-check hers and see where they are. If they're below the pressure specified in the owner's manual, pump them up. You can, in general, safely go as high as the pressure noted on the tire sidewall--but the ride usually gets harsher the higher you go. Higher pressures almost always result in lower rolling resistance, which gives better economy.
It is possible the alignment could be off, also resulting in lower economy. Unlikely in a new car, but possible. The brakes could be sticking, or something similar may be happening.
Winter driving puts a hurt on MPG. It takes more energy to keep the engine at operating temperature, plus all the fluids are thicker and take more energy to move around (until they warm up, which takes energy). Plus tires will be stiffer and not roll as easily, and air will be more dense requiring more energy to push through and more energy to pull into the engine. But if your car is getting noticeably better economy, that points to something with her car or with her driving.
Try to isolate the problem.

Many people report lower mpg the first couple thousand miles until the engine is broken in. My Justa is an 09 and I remember my mileage being in the upper 20's originally but mileage improved after a couple thousand miles.
All - thanks for your feedback and comments. I will swap with her for a week and drive my normal route and with my driving to see if the fuel economy is any different. We may also choose to do a "roadtrip" just to prove out the average all hwy driving mpg. I hope that it's just the winter fuel mix and that the car is still very new that it will improve over time.

I have a 2011 MCa and hubby has a 2013 Coupe automatic. I notice that his mileage is a little lower than mine, but he doesn't have 2,000 miles yet. I also notice that his OBC is closer to reality, and that it moves more responsively than mine does. We both use Fuelly.com to calculate our actual mileage, and we reset our mpg calculator and trip odo each time. (yes, we have a running challenge to each other, you probably guessed that) I can get up to 40 on very long straight trips but have averaged 32 in mixed driving with many short trips. He's getting 30 - 32 in all highway driving. So his is a bit less than mine, and I suspect that after the engine gets broken in more, it will improve.
UPDATE: I thought I'd update this in case anyone was interested or was experiencing the same concern I had on fuel economy. So I just spent the week driving my wife's Spice Orange justa and averaged a full tank at 35mpg....win. This is exactly where I expected the fuel economy to be at with my driving habits (my MCS gets around 36mpg). When I actually had time to poke around into her car, the first thing I noticed was that her auto climate control would turn on the A/C when activated. I do not have auto climate in my MCS so didn't know how this system operated. I also never had a vehicle that had auto climate control. So I verified with the manual that the MINI's auto climate turns on A/C when in AUTO. So, my hunch was that this was probably where the fuel economy was tanking with the compressor running. I still decided to drive it for a week just to prove out the "driving style" theory as well as the "route" I take vs. hers. Anyway, I told my wife that it was her driving style and that she has a heavy foot...LOL......and then told her about the AUTO/AC.
SIDENOTE: having spent a week in an MCa I have to say, I really really really dislike the 6speed automatic and I am glad my daily MINI is a manual. This thing struggles to figure out what gear it needs to be in and is constantly shifting around. I hate the downshifts and can never figure out how much pressure to apply to get the car to upshift when I want it too. I was sad driving it for a week (MINI or not, it was NOT fuN). I did try it in sports mode and that did put a grin :D

Did you measure the fuel consumption in the sport mode? I own a 2011 Justa with a manual transmission but was loaned a MCa when my car was in for service. My wife and I both drove the Justa with the automatic in the sport mode and we both thought it performed very well. I prefer manual transmissions, but was pleasantly surprised by the automatic. My Justa has averaged about 35 mpg in almost 15,000 miles of driving (measured value). I drive mostly hilly back roads with lots of turns and some highway and stop and go driving. My gas mileage improved noticeably after a few thousand miles.

Hello All, I just recently purchased my mini cooper countryman....So far i filled up my tank today at 3pm and by the time i got home iam already down one bar of gas....I was told it would average 35 highway and 27 city....combined about 28.....plus its 4 degrees here in new york...I mainly brought it cause i thought id get good gas mileage....So far its a fail...lol

[QOHHHUOTE=got-m1ni;3681457]It should improve over time. I have just over 8K miles now and I'm getting 34/36mpg so far this winter. Prior to that, I was getting 36/38mpg. So looks like the fuel/weather difference is knocking down 2mpgs for me. Anyway, I'm happy with my fuel economy on my MCS

I hope it improves....I just started a new job....so I figured this would help me on the mileage per gallon and help me save a little money a month.....the car I had before I was spending 200 dollars a month on gas and that's with regular.....so I am.hoping I will.be.not spending more than that a month.....How much do.u spend a month??
