I am not sure I can provide good correlation since I do not have a Countryman. Perhaps other Countryman owners out there can share their feedback on their fuel economy during break in and after break in period.

I have a 66 mile roundtrip daily commute, so I would pump at the end of the week. Figure 4x a month, avg $3.80 (premium) at 11.5 gallons which seems to be where I fill up at would be around $175 / month. As compared to my previous car (SUV) which would be $3.60 (regular) x 17 gallons...around $273/ month. I'm saving about $100 / month with my MINI. I have mainly backroad driving so average speed is around 45/55 mph.

Also note that the gauges tend to be pretty non-linear. What does the OBC say you are getting for MPG, and how much range left to empty?

I drive a '09 Non S auto and am getting 33.5 mpg calculated at the pump. My mini says 34.5. I use Chevron 92 octane mixture. I'm definitely happy with the mileage ; D

My 2012 Auto Justa gets around 35-36 mpg on my mostly highway (60-75 mph) with a bit of in-town traffic commute. OBC typically says about 38 mpg.
I really don't hate the automatic. I've gotten used to shifting with my foot - can usually give it just enough poke to get a downshift. Could always pull the stick over and shift it manually, I suppose, but never felt the need to. I do pull it over to get into Sport mode without searching for the button when the need arises (say, highway exit/entry ramps...), but I sure don't miss the manual when sitting in traffic on the hills in the one larger town I go thru.
Now, I once had a '93 Miata with an auto...that really sucked. Got whiplash every time it changed gears.....

I find that in the '13 justa that the OBC is within 1mpg of mileage/tank fill up. On my '12 S it is within 2mpg. The OBC is always higher. In terms of range left to empty when I try to drain the tank it will usually say 90 miles to go. I usually just fill up when there's about three candy corns left.

The short story here is that my wife and I walked into MINI dealer agreeing to get an AUTO MC (she cannot drive manual). Skip to the end, I walked out with a manual, totally screwing over my wife. I could not justify getting a fun car to drive in an auto. So, I had to make up by getting ANOTHER MINI and that's why she has a Justa. So, we have a HIS and HER mini now

I'm sure if I spent more time in the Justa, I could figure it out and live with it but playing around with the gas pedal to get it into the gear is silly...I prefer to drive manual in that case. LOL

Here's another discussion on this point, and my own humble recommendation for the egg.

When I wrote that, I was driving the original Gollum which was an '04 R53 tuned to 210 hp.

Gollum II, which is a 2013 R56 Justa, averages 38 mpg with a best tank so far of 40.5 mpg. Mind you that 40.5 was within 2,000 miles of purchase, so if I took my own advice for a tank I bet I could do better.

Cheers,

Charlie

A question for those that have a Mini "Justa"...

What octane rating does Mini recommend for it?

We are noticing with the route being driven daily that the first bar drops at 75 miles, second at 140 miles, third at 210 miles, and then it is non linear from there. It will lose another bar around 40 miles or so? We are using premium which is around 92 in our area.

Would love to get that 38mpg+ but haven't achieved it yet, car now has over 3K miles on odometer.

I remember my owner's manual specifying 89 at a minimum, but recommending the use of 91+. So I use super-grade fuel--or at least the lame excuse for it that we get here in CA.

Slave to Felines,

Thanks for your response! So mini recommends basically the same octane rated fuel for both the "S" and "non S". Apparently their compressions ratios are fairly close to each others. Very interesting.

I believe the S (and JCW) have significantly lower compression ratios than the Cooper, so they can run more boost.

OK, according to Automobile Mag's website, it's not "significantly"; the Cooper runs 11:1, the S runs 10.5:, and the JCW 10:1. But they are lower, and that is to allow for more boost.

I also use http://www.fuelly.com and like the information found there.

33.0 is the average mpg of the 6 2013 MINIs tracked; looks like 4 out of 6 have automatic transmissions.

I also monitor my Android running the Torque app, to check for mpg drop when my a/c is running. It looks to be around 2 mpg. My Android connects to my ELM 327 (OBCII via Bluetooth).

From http://www.fuelly.com/car/mini/cooper/2003 my Justa scored the second highest average mpg out of the 20 2003s tracked there.

Not getting the MPG you guys are saying

2013 Justa - I am lucky to get 29.5 MPG. Probably 3/4 city 1/4 quick 4 mile freeway each way to work. I have an Auto, Justa, Sport Sus, 17" Wheels 205's and Panoroof. Not reving beyond 3500 at the most but mostly slow, sucks. I think i will start revving and stop worrying about a couple mpg because i am not getting nearly what you guys are. Mine is being taken off the digital reader.

Relatively new 2013 R59 Justa, manual transmission, with ~1500 miles on the clock here. Average thus far is 36.2 mpg, and my best tank was 37.7 mpg.

I track using the Gas Cubby app on my iPhone.

I have averaged 34.5 on my 2012 justa automatic with 15" wheels, 91 octane gas. Best tank was 37.8, worst was 33. Only 2300 miles so far.

You might want to check fuelly.com You can search on the site for other Mini's and check out their mileage.

I have to correct a statement made early in this thead. The manual transmissions no longer get better MPG. By having 6,7,8 speed electronically controlled trannies it is just not true anymore except for just a few cars, the Fiat 500 being one.

Also

MINI COOPER = non turbo

MINI COOPER S = turbo

Stop with the "Justa"- Sounds so degrading.
IMHO

SNIP
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find....32872&id=32873
indicates the 2013 Cooper consistently gets better mpg with the manual, versus the auto. 1 mpg better for each category, City, Highway, and Combined.

Though only 6 Coopers are represented, http://www.fuelly.com/car/mini/cooper/2013 also indicates higher mpg recorded by the 2 Coopers with manual trannys. To me, fuelly gives good "real world" info.

To many, it's a term of endearment. To each, his/her own.

mpg

My 2007 Mini is my daily driver/commuter. My drive is 52 miles each way, all freeway. I set the cruise control at 64 and keep my foot out of it. My OBC says that for the last 108,450 miles I've averaged 42.9 mpg.
