CAR & TRUNK ISSUE** Does anyone else experience a creaking noise?

Hey guys,

I have a question I need some answers on. I own a 2004 Mini Cooper S with only around 8,000 miles. Does anyone experience some sort of creaking sound coming from the trunk area while going over bumps and rough roads? I took out the tool set hoping it'd do something, and also took off the panel connect to the trunk on the inside but nothing has change..

Any suggestions?

Try greasing the rear sway bar bushings.

What is this "trunk" of which you speak?

I have the exact same issue. Trunk is a creak...made it better by loosening the hatch stops (making them longer, putting more tension on the hatch)...these are the rubber pieces that put tension on the lock, and tension on the hatch door. More tension = less creaks / rattles / etc.

I forget who on this forum told me, so I can't properly credit this advice. Wrapping the part of the catch on the bootlid itself with electrical tape will stop the issue. You have to use just the right amount, so it doesn't interfere with latch operation, but still keeps the lid from moving around. It really works, and the member who clued me in said he learned it from his dealer. He also said it may need to be redone periodically, but I have over 10k since I first did it, and it's fine. Other noises have popped up since, though.....

Are you sure it's by loosening the rubber peices up? Because after just checking mine not even 30 seconds ago I noticed that they were loose. I decided to tighten them and see if that makes a difference next time I take it for a drive. What do you think?

I did the hatch stops thing myself before learning about the electrical tape. I even put felt on the body where the stops hit, in case THEY were the source of the noise. Moving the bumpers would always seem to work for a little while, then the noise came back. Your results may vary, but regular black electrical tape was the way to go for me.

Im sorry I just want to make sure I'm doing everything 100% right. I did lossen the stops and it did not do anything. So about how much electrical should I put? Only the stops on the trunk itself, or the ones on the bottom, closer to the bumper? About how much tape, just around the circular part of the rubber stop, or on the lower part of the rubber stop as well? Please help. I'm so close to resolving this annoyance.

Because I know firsthand how annoying this is, and because my explanation may have been lacking, I've taken a photo of the area that needs to be taped. As far as how much, I forget, but it was probably two or three turns. Mine looks like heck, but it's been on there for almost a year now. Still quiet, so I don't feel the need to redo it, but could if I was more picky. So anyway, this is part of the latch, on the bottom center of the trunk lid that holds it closed.

PROBLEM SOLVED, this is WHY I joined the forums because of people like you! Between the mutual understanding of the problem, fast clear cut responses and pictures to clarify exactly where to fix the annoyance I am now a happy man. thank you so much and I hope there are other people out there that read this thread and tackle the same issue. Once again brother THANK YOU and if there are any other little tips you may introduce me to let me know.
