I never did like bending the side electrode or tapping it is This is way more precise.

 

So trying to read through this thread and I'm really wanting to change plugs on my car when it arrives. Its a 12 coupe jcw and has 91k miles. Which copper plugs should I go.to? I tried brisk when I had a fiat abarth and they fouled pretty bad after a few thousand miles. Rather run NGK if I can.

Just a note to think about.
IF...the spark plugs actually "fouled" (black sooty garbage), that's NOT...the spark plugs fault. That's either an ECM mapping problem or other engine problem..!

It was the plugs fault lol. I swapped back to my NGK plugs and ran perfect with no issues.

I am about to buy plugs for the Coupe but trying to figure out which plug to use and what gap for them. I am going to order coil packs also since mine are rusted looking

 

Maybe plug wasn't getting hot enough to burn off the soot.

 

We're both brands the same heat range? If not that would explain it.. Is your car stock tune? If so you need the stock heat range and not something colder.

I need an NGK Ruthenium plug with with the PSPE (Projected Square Platinum Electrode).

I was wondering how you verified that the appropriate size for an r56 was FR7BHX-S (92400)?

I haven't had any luck verifying what's the correct part number or gauging.

 

Mine is an '06 R53.

ngk.com is a little wonky in that department...

...what I did is find the one that they "verify" and just go 1 heat range colder:

if I type in the plugs I've been using lately which have been doing really good,
and thoroughly documented by many others as good ones too,
are these which NGK tells me are incompatible:



But they are kosher!

NGK will list the BKR6EIX as compatible,
but not the 7.



Rather odd,
but I guess it's a liability thing on their end where the legal department requires them to strictly adhere to OE spec?

 

Yeah, I have an 2007-2011 r56 so here is what the NGK Part search tool was showing but it wasn't clear about the turbo or DOHC option.

 

That chart indicates only for the R50/52/53 with the W10 or W11 motors...

...punched in 2010 MCS to see what they list,
all they have are three available options,
and one of those is discontinued!



Tried to do a cross reference based on that but couldn't find anything.

Gave a quick look into other cars that use the Prince engine that may happen to have alternates that people have found,
still didn't find much...

I took your advice and messaged NGK on their site. I guess the entire internet will learn when I do too. You wouldn't think that it'd take over half a day to figure out the best spark plug...

I do and plan on trying them at next plug change interval.

 

I'm digging deeper since something doesn't smell right. I think that their part search tool is broke. Nothing like giving tech support to the leader in the industry, lol.

I did indeed, put them in several months back.

They've been performing very well!

Will inspect them soon and see how they look after 4 months.

I was surprised by the price … only about $8.50 each on them from reputable distributor…

I think that’s what I’m going to run on the stock 2006 JCW … seems like a more durable alternative and may have some other benefits

Did oil change today and pulled plugs to check them, can't really say much except that they've been performing well and appear A-OK after inspection and I think that the protruded tip is a great design.

Gapped at 0.29" and they're still there.

I haven't experimented much with various gap sizes,
but wondering if I should?

Any input/opinions regarding gap size is most welcomed!

I have mine still on the shelf... Car has been parked in the warehouse for a LONG time now... Got all my service items sitting there ... just need the disposable wrench time for my unpaid labor for myself... UGH.

My Coop is a 2006 R53 cooper s running JCW airbox and a couple of other little tweeks but i dont think shes mapped (that said she is rapaid so i regularly ? that) would i be right in thinking i would be better to run plugs more designed for the JCWs rather than standard cooper s ones for a bit better performance, mpg and general well being of my fantastic little daily driver (im uk based if that makes a difference)

Installed on my 2006 Factory JCW....
Running well.. crisp throttle response and the plugs have good burn pattern... Spirited street driving at 3000 ft elevation, 89 octane Pump gas.

More than a year on these now... flawless... Pulled them last week during oil change to check them out.... perfect color... looks like good combustion.
