Mini VS. Porsche! June 21st Road Atlanta
Hmm, a bit disappointing. I mean, i know that stock for stock the porche would clock the Mini, but their response could have been a bit more light hearted. Instead they came off as stuffy and arrogant, just like most of their owners I suppose

Porsche's Official Response:
Dear Jim,
Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.
But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. If you need a reminder of our intent, please take a look at this short video:

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.
Good luck with your race at Road Atlanta on June 21; we hope you enjoy the day.
Sincerely,
Detlev Von Platen
President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America

Not sure that's a *great post* by Detlev... I think Porsche could have had a little fun with this yet they chose the snobbish route. That's too bad. I can't wait to see MINI's next step.
This is the kind of thing I like to watch. A good race between cars that you'd least expect to race. Of course Porsche has to throw all their junk about we only race for this and that. They only made themselves seemike whiny little punks. Ahhh, let them be that way.
DUH????
Barrettrw11,--Where ever did you get that idea??
All of my friends that drive Porsche's seem to like my 2009 JCW. I have not even been teased and believe me I expected it. I belong to the Audi club and they have a bunch of Porsche owners. My friend Jack is going down to Homestead this Sunday to run his 911 Turbo with the Audi Club. I could go with My JCW but I'm broke and I can't go down to spectate because this stupid cancer has me so tired I would not enjoy it.
I just think that their CEO is a little worried that if they did lose or not win by enough it would be an embarrasment to their company. I personaly would not think so but He is the boss. I'm pretty sure the Porsche would come out ahead but in racing you "NEVER KNOW" what can happen.
I just do some hot laps with my car and have dusted a few Porsche's. Not because my Mini is Faster but because they did not push their cars very hard. Hot laps are fun but still not racing.
If this does come off it will be talked about for a long time.

I'm not trying to start anything. Just from my point of view it seems like they would rather put their time and effort into something more meaningful i guess. I plan on owning a Porsche later in my life and right next to it in my garage is going to be a MINI as well.
I agree with you in that the CEO of Porsche is a little afraid of what could happen if they would race.

I'm with you on wanting a Porsche too. What I was trying to say was that the Porsche owners I know are all really good CAR PEOPLE. The bigshots at Porsche are probably of different stock. They are more into business and winning then just plain having fun. Their loyal customers are more into just having fun with their cars. If I could just hit the lotto or powerball I would get a Porsche and an Audi R-8 to go along with my JCW Mini Cooper. I just have this old saying by Mark Twain,

This sure has been a good post. I love all of the different opinions.

I think the funniest thing about this campaign--just got the email today--is MINI's dig against Porsche drivers for wearing "too many pastel-colored sweaters over their shoulders"...as if there aren't MINI drivers who look like that, too?
Right.
Right.
There are quite a few snobby, d bag MINI owners out there, but I don't think we have half as many as Porsche. And you'll find people like this all brands.
Actually think this is a remarkable marketing stunt by Mini but wish they would do as Porsche suggested. Mini should step up and give serious support to race teams and help them win on the race track as Porsche, Mazda and many more manufacturers are and have been doing for many years....
