Ordering 2010 MCS Clubman and getting cold feet
Ordering 2010 MCS Clubman and getting cold feet
I placed an order for a MCS Clubman last Saturday May-22 since the dealer could not locate one with my specs, so now I will get the car with exact specs that I wanted (Specs in the signature), currently the production status is 112 and probably in a week or so it will change to 150 and most likely will get it in eight weeks (end of July).
I test drove the car and I really liked it and planning to keep it for many years, but I see people are complaining about some engine issues like fried Turbo, cold start, lack of power… are these still happening even on 2010 models?
Also I keep hearing that the 2011 will have a complete redesigned engine and will not have any of these issues, but I guess no one can guarantee on the new engine until it passes real life test.
I feel a little uncertain now and I am not sure if I wait until September (very optimistic) to order a 2011 and get it in November or December, how good will be the new engine.
I need to get some opinions.

Roll of the dice. If the 2011 engine is "new", is it better? I've had a few "new" model vehicles. When I was working, I would buy a new truck every 2-3 years. Bought a '88 Chevy when the new model came out and had nothing but problems. Bought a '97 Ford when the new trucks came out and had problems. Bought a '03 Dodge Ram when the Hemi first came out and had nothing but problems. Run, don't walk from new models. After selling or Lemon Lawing a few vehicles (Dodge, Ford, Chev) I finally learned to wait for someone else to work out the bugs.
It's not going to be a brand new engine, just updated. The cold start issue is supposed to be eliminated for 2011, even on the last 2010 models. A brand new engine won't be out till 2012-2013 (most likely a 3 cylinder).
The 2011 MINI you'll be able to order in August and take delivery in October (that's what I'm doing). The 2011 interior will be refreshed as well as minor exterior parts.

It was my understanding the "new" engine was to be a BMW production engine. Maybe new to a MINI, not BMW. Did that change ?

Looks to me like the '11s are going to be changed a little, but seems to be the same general engine. MCS are getting true Valvetronic integration, and is gaining 7 hp. There are gonna be 3 new colors too, Spice Orange (Can't wait to see this, i loved HO), Some bland grey, and BRG MkII.
Forums such as this can scare anyone to death. Check out similar posts about other car makes and you will find similar negative threads.
I have had no issues in my 10k miles thus far. An arguement can be made either way - that the updated engine is a better engine OR that it will have more new, less proven technology. There will always be newer goodies on the next models - regardless of when you buy. Good luck on your decision.

I say don't let all these "issues" scare you. Every car has an issue now and then, they're cars. These forums will scare the crap out of anyone, for any car. I have a 2010 R56 MCS with a bit over 5k miles, and the car is great...no fried turbo, no cold start issues...nothing. I did have a water pump start to leak at about 3k miles, replaced in a day at the dealer and was good to go.
Worry less, MINI more...

Unless you're in a hurry, I would at least wait for official details and photos of the 2011 refresh to appear on MotoringFile. At that point a 2010 should still be available to order for at least another month, or you may like the 2011 changes enough that you want to wait. I feel that the 2011 is so close that you may miss an opportunity for a better informed decision about which way to go.
I could be wrong about how the timing will go this time, but it in the past they never announced changes for the following year, and simultaneously said that the current year model is no longer available to order and new orders must be for next year's model. There was always some overlap and opportunity to still order the current year model.
During the 1st gen, the 2005 refresh turned out to be worth waiting for. I suspect it may be the case this time as well. Personally all of the updates that have been mentioned on MotoringFile are changes that I would want.
