Making Badges Magnetic

I have a non-magnetic badge that I would like to make magnetic. I found some magnetic sheets through Avery for household use that I could cut to the size of the badge, but wondered if there might be something more for use on our MINIs (outdoorsy).

Any thoughts?

That stuff should be good. The Magnetic stuff I have on the badges I purchase is about the same.

Albie,

I found the Avery magnet material to be too lightweight and not enough "pull" and will allow the badge to fly off. I found some 30 mil sheets at a place called BuildaSign. That was probably overkill - I think maybe 15 or 20 mil would be sufficient.

I may be able to get away with the Avery since the plan for this badge is to mount it on the boot (gominigo license plate badge holder). But I'll check into the BuildaSign - more "pull" would make me feel better.

Why not use double-sided foam tape (ie, sticky on both sides)? It has exceptional grip and you can always remove the badge later using dental floss.

I change my badges around too often to use tape. Except for the enamel club badge I got. That one has some NASA grade sticky stuff on it and is about as close to a permanent fixture as you can get (though I could always just remove the whole badge holder itself).

Yep, this badge is an enamel type also - heavier, solid and while I change my grille badges around, this one may stay permanently on the boot. I just haven't decided yet. A heavy grade magnetic would probably do the trick.

I looked quickly through the BuildaSign site and didn't see where you could get plain sheets of the magnetic stuff. It almost seemed like you had to get something printed on it. But I've got to look through when I get a little more time. Thanks for the input!

You should be OK with the Avery since this badge is going on the boot. Just remember to keep your speed in reverse under 60.

If it is a heavy enamel badge, I'm not sure the Avery stuff will hold it on even at a standstill. The 30 mil stuff I got would probably hold it, but I'd probably be nervous even at that. Were it me, I'd probably look at investing in a dedicated badge holder just for that badge and use some industrial grade speed tape to mount it. But I'm probably more paranoid than most.

On the buildasign site, I think you may have to "design" a sign under the magnetics and just don't bother uploading any graphics or text (use start from scratch). It is on the expensive side, so you might want to try surfing around for other sources.
