I have used my suction Ram mount to hold my camera during many an autocross. The camera has more mass than the iPhone and I was sticking it to the leather dash on my M Roadster, so it should be just fine with the iPhone on a window.

Save a trip to the mechanic. Rev also reads and lists engine codes (like those responsible for your Check Engine/MIL light), and allows you to reset them as well!

So no luck with 09 R56?

It has been a long time since I posted here.

I finally had the time and chance to try out the latest REV and my IPOD Touch on my friends 09 JCW MINI. Good to go!

Everything works fine, so I don't know what issues other folks may be having with their 09 MCS's, umouse and others trying this combo.

Now I have not tried with the iphone, so that may be the combo that has issues with REV.

@ OJM, the combo I use works fine on the R53, we did a data logging run on my friends modded 05 MCS.

@ Bor, you have to turn the kiwi off, it will not drain your battery overnight, but it does draw a minuscule bit of power. You can use the switch or unplug from the OBD port to turn off.

I prefer the switch but you need a sharp fingernail to catch it.

Cheers old81.

Can you remember what it couldn't read on the R53? Does it definitely read boost and intake temps?

Here are some screen shots as I scroll down through Rev. This is connected to my 2006 MCS. The green dots indicate values that Rev detects on the Mini OBD2 and can be displayed.

I ordered a Kiwi wifi last week to try on my r56 JCW. I will let everyone know if it does or doesn't work. Of course that is if I ever get the device.

I ordered last Thursday, called on monday to check the status and they tell me they are back ordered and it looks like they just got them in today.

If you are going to order one of these guys DO NOT order directly from PLX devices, horrible customer service, they still have not returned my email from last week. Good thing I purchased the 3 day air for it to take 2.5 weeks to get here, and I was really hoping to have it by this weekends AutoX.

This does work with my 2009 JCW, the only problem I have with the Kiwi is that it sometimes looses wifi connection with my phone. It is nice having the coolant temp and boost pressure. I will try to get a video up of the app in action.

Finally got it to work

I just happened to install Rev2.0 today and went out to give it another try. At first there was a green blip and I saw some metrics. But then all went dead. 30 minutes of fiddling with cables and networks and hot plugging later .... It finally started working!

The connection seems to be very weird. It would show a guage as working and then just freeze. I'd have to flip the little plx switch off and on for it to resync.

I will try to swap the plx kiwi if I can find someone local and see if it's a dongle issue. When it works, it's cool! I used it to reset my CEL for a sub par O2 reading.... Going on the dyno this weekend so that should take care of that.

Would love to see your video from plug to app running with guages.
Thanks.

uMouse, it is not your dongle my kiwi wifi does the exact same thing. So I messed with it a bit today, and I found that if you turn off 3G it works perfectly. So I am not sure if that is an iPhone issue or kiwi or Rev but it seems to fix the disconnect issue. I was able to drive for about 30 minutes with no drop in connection.

The new version is really cool though it allows you to put up to 5 readings on one screen, and also allows you to have multiple vehicles and will do torque and WHP calculations based on the weight you put it, though not sure how accurate it is.

Another cool thing is when you you have speed as your main gauge in the center it will start a timer every time you start moving from 0 MPH so you can do 0-60 times (on a track of course) and it will save the times for you.

If you are on the fence about the app I have to say it is worth 40 bucks, of course you have to spend $150 on the dongle, so it starts getting a bit expensive but when you look at adding regular gauges it doesn't seem so bad

Ignore the text in the middle of the screen, my backgrounding utility popped up as I was snapping the pic.

The greatest thing is that I can now really tell when the car is warmed up

I will post some more pics later.

I was looking into buying gauges, specially boost and water temp... This discussion got me hyped up and since I have an iPhone I just couldn't resist...

I placed an order for a Kiwi WiFi this afternoon (not backorder :-) and purschased REV on the app store already!

Daynes,

Thanks for the pics. Waiting for more.

It never dawned on me to turn off the 3G. Will have to try that on the way home. I purchased this setup some time ago... it's just never wanted to work for me until now. Hope this last piece of the puzzle will get me to the prize.

For some odd reason, I also purchased Dash Command app... it doesn't work either... but we'll see.

Few more pics for ya, you can see what OBD items the r56 supports, they are the items that have a green light.

Please excuse my blindness if the answer to this has already been posted...but has anyone on here gotten this to work on an ipod touch?

This seems like a really cool 'toy' to have around...and I'm thinking of getting this for my ipod, assuming it's compatible...

Some of the earlier posters have it working with their iPod touch, the new version should work as well but I will let a touch user verify for you.

Danyes: I see your weight is different from the one I read on my registration.. Which is 1130kg

Is it because you have a JCW and me an S? Do you have a convertible?

ARrrrrgggggg piece of ****

My goodness.. is it so hard to design good hardware/software these days?

I turned off 3G... now nothing works. Back to the original problem of spinning sundial and no metrics. There seems to be a wifi connection but the PLX just keeps getting errors for the protocol check.

I knocked some sense into it

Last ditch effort, i gave the KIWI 3 good whacks on a hard surface and presto.. instant connection. I've tested it now for two trips and still good. Now it even works with Dash Command which it never ever has before.

Finally.

jfchamp, My Weight is in lbs yours is in kg, jcw is 1225 kg. Still not sure why we don't join the rest of the world in using metric.

uMouse, I will have to remember that if mine ever stops working. Not very impressed so far with the kiwi, I should have stuck with the Germans and gone with an elmcan2, the Germans always make good stuff.

Believe it or not, most of these OBD dongle things use the same PIC microcontroller. It implements the OBD interface and protocol converter. After that it's a simple shot to a serial to wifi...or serial... or whatever you want interface.

crazy question, im thinking about getting one and i just want to make sure.

i have a r56 with a unichip, the chip alters the outputs of the ecu. i assume this wouldnt interfere with the data acquisition through the obd2 port right? has anyone tested this it would be nice to know if im still good to go, moneys tight and i dont want to be a guinea pig

Jfchamp, yea I didn't notice it had both on their, the specs for the jcw do show it being a bit heavier, could be the wheels or brakes or some of the other bits that add some weight.

Version 2.0 does work on my iPod Touch 2G with the exception of GPS of course. I'm also using the Elmcan2 interface. 2005 R53.

How many of you have the Kiwi WiFi working reliably with an R56 and iPhone 3G?
