You'll have to excuse my ignorance here but I'm new. How do you tell if you have an R50,52,56 etc. I have an 08 Cooper 1.6.

Yep. The 2nd Gen hardtops (R56) and the Clubman (R55) began with the 2007 model year. The 2nd Gen cabrios (R57) will start with the 2009 model year.
