Escalade Hybrid more fuel efficent than a MINI? Right...

So I decided to check out the ridiculous idea that is the Escalade Hybrid, and on Cadillac’s website they claim it is more fuel efficient in the city than a 2008 mini s convertible. (Go to this site and click fuel efficiency)
http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/model/landing.jsp?model=hybrid&year=2009

This seems like absolute bs to me, especially since the site claims that the mini gets 19 in the city when miniusa says it get 21. How exactly do they get away with bending the truth like that?

2008 MINI Cooper S Convertible EPA City rating is 19mpg. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

Don't forget the 08 convertible is still using the old engine like the hardtops up to 06 . That's also the Auto version which gets less MPG and the MPG seems to have gone down a bit in recent years for those older models (and it doesn't seem to be to do with the change in the MPG test).

Bascially, they found the least fuel efficient MINI they could find, which has now been phased out. I think the new convertible next year uses the new engine and should have economy much like an R56.

Yup...there's gonna be some surprised owners when they find out Cadillac is fooling them. Of course, if they're buying a Escalade they are probably easily fooled to start with.

Anyway....why do automakers dare to brag about 19 mpg! That is hardly impressive.

Well, if you must buy an oversized luxotank you might as well get 19mpg.

I'm happy to see more hybrids of every size and shape. It's part of the long term solution to our national energy issues. As for the dubious comparisons, it's done all the time by advertisers. Gee, an ad that's not 100% truthful! Shocking!

That is just silly.....kind of like a lot of the auto manufacturers saying "You can get over 400+ miles out of a tank of gas". Yes that is true but they neglect to tell you that it is a 18-20+ gallon tank.

They also failed to tell you that the escalade will be in the shop 50% of the time. Had a couple of friends with escalades & one with the srx. Nothing but troubles, and rated far below average by cr. They all got rid of em within the first year.

I guess for the person who drives 100% in the city, then they might give the green escalade a look (but good luck parking it in the city). When you factor freeway or mixed driving then they aren't even in the same ballpark (the escalade jumps to a whopping 21MPG freeway - wow). I'm all for green, but that is a lot of money for very little MPG gain between a regular and hybrid. For the price of one hybrid escalade, you could buy two minis (and them in the same spot as one escalade)!

I've always been a hard core GM guy (before I put money down on my mini that is) and own (and will keep) a Chev Duramax diesel for the pullin... but the US automakers have their heads stuck in the sand... I read last week that ford claims there isn't a market for their new 50+MPG diesel focus in the US - unbelievable when VW stopped taking orders on their new 40MPG TDI diesel b/c they've filled all production for the next year (I looked hard @ the TDI before choosing the mini).

Oh god that is soo funny...I hate those commercials. How insulting is it as a consumer that the manufacturer thinks they are really fooling us?!!

They also do not mention how the value of the escalade will decrease approximately 30K the instant you drive it off the lot. That is no joke. Let's see. Getting 2 MPG better, how long will it take to recoup 30K. Well, I lost my calculator but lets be generous and say what? About 40-50 years! These behemoth vehicle people just won't give up. Amazing.

I wouldn't exactly call this "green." When you factor in the carbon produced by making the batteries, the slight increase in fuel economy just doesn't equate.

Uh ...its kinda' like politics ...you just say whatever needs to be said to get folks to buy into your product.

Your right, my intent was better for the environment, but now that I think about it... marginally better may be more accurate.

Cadillac apparently thinks that those considering buying an Escalade are Mini buyers. Yeah right. Come on Caddy, bring back the Cimarron so us Mini buyers have a real choice!! (LOL)
