Used vs. New

Would you recommend purchasing a used MCS or saving up and purchasing a new MCS?

I'm kind of in a bind deciding on what would be the best decision, New or Used. I have always purchased used, but I am concerned about the older models compared to the newer models. I have test drove a 08 MCS btw, but never an older model. Other than Mileage, what would be some concerns/items I should look for in purchasing an older MINI?

You should be concerned that a used one will be priced only slightly less ( or more ) than a brand new one. Just don't go crazy on options or get any at all. Check prices on Autotrader.com and you'll see what I mean.

In an attempt to keep this unbiased, I'm moving this to the General MINI talk forum.

It depends if you prefer the R53 (supercharged) or R56 (turbo) version. You can't get R53s new anymore. I prefer R56s personally, and as pointed out prices used are very strong, so you probably won't save much by getting used.

One month ago I was up against the same decision, after pricing used ones, I ordered NEW. Just a little more..... or less than some used. Check the prices you'll see what I mean

Check prices for used MINIs in your area. While some of the older models do have known problems, let me point out that they are KNOWN and there is a general rule of thumb for when they come up. If you search the forum here for the model year you're looking at when you go to purchase a used MINI, you can get an idea for what repairs you will be responsible for and at about what mileage marker you can expect the issue to happen.

Also keep in mind that a lot of the reason that folks wind up on this forum is because they are having an issue, so you will see a larger representation of people with problems here. Odds are, if you buy a used MINI you will have thousands of trouble free miles.

That said, I bought new because the prices on used MINIs here were not that much less expensive and I was still scared to drive a manual full time, so I needed an automatic. Used automatics are not only hard to find out here, but they are also nearly as much as a new MINI off the lot.

Mostly depends on what used MINIs are available.
If you have one spotted you like, and can get a good evaluation on its condition used is a good option, either R53 or R56.

You should also drive both an R53 and R56 to determine which you like better.

If there are no good used MINIs around at a good price, just buy new.

Agreed. I test drove an 07 MCS with ~13k miles on it. The dealer wanted $28,900, and although it had the 6yr/100k warranty, I could've ordered an 09 similarly configured for about $750 more. That was a no brainer to me.

In April/May I was asking myself that same question and came up with the same answer as those above me did--the cars in such demand now that good used cars and selling for just below (less than $1500) or at current MSRP prices. I had originally wanted to buy a used car when I began my research, but quickly changed my tune after doing a little research. I highly recommend ordering a new car.

Good luck in your search!
