What SCCA class would the 08 JCW fall into?

Hi All,
I'm currently solo racing my R53 in G stock and having a blast doing it. Everyone should go and try it at least once. I'm like days from trading my 04 MCS in on a 08 JCW and was curious as to what class that would put me in? I asked at the last outing and nobody there knew...but most of them are Miata owners and said John Cooper WHO? I don't know him?!@ Thanks in advance for any help!

SCCA has all JCW's from 06 onwards in B-Stock.
Very bad for Mini's, and impossibly non-competitive against the RX8's that dominate the class.

B Stock (BS)
BMW
M Coupe & Roadster (‘96-’00)
M3 (E30)
M3 (E36)
Z3 6cyl NOC
Chevrolet
Corvette (‘63-’82)
Chrysler
Prowler
Ferrari
308, 328
Jaguar
XKE 6 cyl. & 12-cyl.
Lotus
Elan RWD
Esprit
Europa Twin Cam
Europa, Renault engine
Maserati
Biturbo
Mazda
RX-7 Turbo (’87-’91)
RX-8
Mercedes
SLK
Morgan
Plus 8
Mini
Cooper S (John Cooper
“Works” package) (‘06+)

Nissan
300ZX Turbo (‘90+)
350Z
Plymouth Prowler
Porsche
911, non-turbo, NOC
911 Club Sport
914/6
928 (all)
944 (16V)
944 Turbo (all)
968
Carrera 2, Carrera 4 (964
chassis)
356 Carrera 4-cam
Toyota MR2 Turbo

Gromit801 is quite right, however...

Unless you've been autocrossing for many years, or are extraordinarily gifted, your driving will be the key factor - not the car.

As you've probably noticed, AutoX is about 90% driver, and 10% car until one reaches a level of expertise that only a few hundred folks in the country attain.

I run an '04 JCW in STX (street tires) and have beaten Corvettes and Lotii on race rubber where the owners were new to the sport.

Chris Scheinfeld running an '89 Civic on Bridgetone RE-01R beat four fifths of a national field at Devens this June - he's that good.

So my two bits are as follows: if you are running at the National level, don't expect to trophy in BS with that car. If you are running at the Regional level as I am, and still learning the trade - have at it! It'll be tons of fun and the class won't matter much...

Cheers,

Charlie

Not always the case.

The JCW is completely mis-classed in BS. I've tried to run in BS for over a year, and I'm not a noob in autocrossing. You could be Fernando Alonso, and still not be competitive in BS with the JCW.

STX is irrelevent, which was the reasoning I tried with the SEB. The JCW is also the ONLY FWD car in BS. I'm not looking to dominate a class, or even win once in awhile. I'd just like to finish in mid-field. Not going to happen in BS.

Which year, and which region? If I could find even one result then I'd have some sense of the extent of the gap...

Could you post a URL to give me a sense of how the battle went?

Here's the link to last season.

We ran Street Tire, but you can look at the times and compare them to BS.

thanks!

what would you estimate shoud be the adjustment due to the difference in tires? up here I'd normally use 2-3 seconds on a 60 second course as ballpark. too much? too little? what tires were on the car?

Hmmm...

Round 12
ST Civic Si 34.056 (looks like this gent is a pretty good driver!)
ST JCW Mini 38.3127
BS Winner 36.193

Round 11
JCW Did not compete

Round 10
JCW Did not compete

Round 9
JCW Did not compete

Round 8
JCW Did not compete

Round 7
ST 02 Mini Cooper 38.887 (this gent looks quick too, working with 120hp or less right?)
ST JCW Mini 40.439
BS Winner 36.645

Round 6
ST 86 VW Golf 70.425 (here's another quick driver, right?)
ST JCW Mini 73.177
BS Winner 64.237

Round 5
JCW Did not compete

Round 4
ST Civic Si 39.061 (same fella as at top?)
ST JCW Mini 42.045
BS Winner 35.733

Round 3
JCW Did not compete

Round 2
JCW Did not compete

Round 1
ST JCW Mini 48.777 (no comparable car in ST for raw times in round 1 I reckon)
BS Winner 44.296

I dunno - mebbe you and I are in the same boat kind sir. I'm getting whipped by faster drivers, regardless of class. Last year Rob LaPierre co drove with me and put my car in the top 5 PAX. This coming Sunday Eric Chiang will co-drive, and my deal with him centers on no money - instead I negotiated permission to ride shotgun in my own car on one run, and to have him do the same for me. When I am within a second of a fast driver in MY OWN car then I reckon equipment and class matter, but I'm not there yet. I reckon if either of us bought an RX-8 we still wouldn't trophy in BS against real talent.

For example in Round 12, that Civic driver on STREET tires kicked the *ss of the entire BS field running RACE rubber!

Am I reading wrong? Interpreting badly?

Finally, the difference in PAX at the SCCA National Level between G Stock (.815) and B Stock (.832) is in the order of 2 percent, so those of us that are not within the same second as the class leaders should perhaps enjoy the learning process and not agonize over the class.

I'll never be a Chris Sheinfield, nor a GJ Dixon - I started too late, and I doubt I have the innate talent anyway. But gol' darnit that Mini is a flat hoot at 10 10ths on an autocross course, so I keep coming back for more...

For all these reasons I send anyone that likes fast driving towards autoX and tell them to expect to get whipped, learn a bunch, and have a ton of fun.
